How to partition a drive keeping info

Post by I34z1k »

Well my topic title is pretty descriptive.

Basically I wanna partition my drive, keeping my original partition while doing so. Is there anything that does this for free? What would be best? Anything I should know?

Cheers

I have an 80GB drive with a single XP partition. I want to Install Ubuntu on the drive too, so need a second partition...would partition magic allow me to do that safely, without losing the data?

(ot) if dual-booting ubuntu and XP, do i have to install ubuntu first?

Try one of these...
Although what you want to do is pretty risky, even with expensive software like Partition Magic.

Listen dude, just because I sent you a link to the goatse.cx man and you were dumb enough to click on it, does not mean you can make false accusations against me :P

Now lets keep this thread on track, shall we?

lmfao ya but how did u know bout the link me wonders... :P

Back to the topic at hand, I'll just kill my 40GB and use that for Ubuntu.

The "topic at hand" is I34z1k's need to partition his drive while keeping the existing info.
How you managed to hijack his thread for yourself is beyond me :P

I use Paragon Partition Manager unlike, in my experience, partition magic it tends to not corrupt my data or screw up, also it works on vista so for me its a biggie.

LMFAO! Bazik and I are having the same problem so it was a mutual need for info, therefore not a hijack but more of an info-attaining alliance :P

Cranial do you ever lose info with that program? Nothing on my drive is too vital, not sure about Bazik's, but I don't have my XP CD with me to reinstall if it goes pearshaped..

You do know that Ubuntu comes with its own partitioner, that will leave your current data alone. It will resize the partition, and create a new one.

Apparently, you can even use it to partition, then quit the installer completely.

Just be very careful, as if you tell it the wrong thing, it can and will delete your precious data.

Thanks Darkstar. I will try it and see what options I have.

Does that help you Bazik?

That's also another important pointer.

NEVER install Linux before Windows.

Always, Windows before Linux, as the Windows bootloader won't pick up Linux.

you are quite right, i forgot about the partitioning tool in ubuntu. i installed it a while ago and it still confussed me at first which is why i installed it on a seperate hard drive because i didnt want to loose any data.
