WindowsXP and DirectX revisited

Post by UbErMeSe »

Hello Everyone! This is my first official post on this forum, but I´m sure many of you will recognise my problem from the Planet Mars forum (Cameron - please forgive me for name dropping ) Anyway here goes...

I have a WinXP Pro PC, with a Riva TNT2 M64 Graphics Card. When I first upgraded to XP from ME it automatically installed Direct 8.1 This version of DirectX is required for games such as: Max Payne, THPS3, Blood Omen II etc. As well as the PLUS! for XP screensavers. At first everything went fine and I could play Max Payne and observe the screensavers in glorious 3D. Then oneday they just stopped working! Max Payne gave me an error message that my graphics card was not DX 8.1 compatible and the screensavers did the same. Now I can´t run any 8.1 based games/apps I need help. I´ve reinstalled and uninstalled the drivers, but at present there are´nt any DirectX uninstallers for XP (or are they?)

Please help! I really wanna play the THPS3 demo on this months Coverdisc!

Why not install the latest Detonator drivers...your card should be supported.

Hello...

Thanks for the reply Oh mighty Grand Poobah Cameron Lord of all things technophyllic!

I forgot to mention in my original post that I have installed, uninstalled and reinstalled all the version of the driver from the one that came packaged with XP to the very latest Detonator version. Also since everything worked fine before, I´m assuming that the porblem must lie with DirectX itself. Which brings me to this question - DOES ANYBODY KNOW OF A SAFE WAY TO REMOVE DX FROM XP?

That´s a trick question, it´s not safe to remove the core component for all multimedia elements from the OS.

Reading your story, I am sadly going to inform you though, that the problem looks like it lies with the upgrade from WinME.
I´d rather format, re-install and you should be A for away.

Just to prove me wrong though, you can try re-installing DirectX 8.1 (make sure to get the version for WinXP/2000).
