Suse anyone?

Post by Friggs »

I just got suse on cd's so i'm pretty :D

But i need to partition my HDD into about 3 segments, maybe 4. Can anyone recomend a partition manager to use for this and where to get it. I've been told it's best to use one to do the partitions, or that it's the only way i can... not sure

anyone here currently using/running suse? opinions?

Which SuSE did you get?

I've partitioned my HDD in 3:

1. XP Pro
2. SuSE EXT 3
3. SuSE Swap Space.

I've got SuSE 9.1 Pro :D

It's SuSe 9.1 pro

I spoke to someone who said it should automatically partition my HDD for me but also heard i must do it manually!

@wit_skapie, Is that SuSe swap space so that you can get your files from one OS to the other? What filing system is it? Correct me if i'm wrong but SuSe won't read NTFS?!?! :?

Do you have a OS (eg XP) already on the drive?
If not use XP install to partition the drive in two!
Then thru Suse, create all the other partitions during installation!

edit: or if you have a specific drive for it, it much easier.
ext3 - filesystem
swap - space
DONE!

I do have XP pro at the moment.

What size should i be looking at for each? I'll leave the majority to XP as it has all my docs and data already. I was thinking in the region of about 10 Gig for SuSe, will this be enough? Total HDD is 120 Gig

SuSE mounts the NTFS - so yes it can see all your windows stuff.

A full install of SuSE 9.1 is just over 10 GIG - but you won't need all that.

I've also got a 120GB - 10 GB for SuSE and 1 GB for the swap.

The SuSE Installer should be able to create the partitions for you.

I got a 120Gig also :P

10 XP
10 Red Hat Linux (500MB swap)
100 Everything else!

If you have a specific drive for it, it's much easier.
ext3 - filesystem
swap - space
DONE!

I first install XP and do the three partitions during installation.

Here he comes to save the day!!!

Mighty mouse to the resque!

What you need to do.
1. Yes 10 GB should be enough for Linux unless you intend to install HEAPS of extra stuff (like UT2004 etc.)
2. You need about 1GB for the Swap Partition.
3. You can use YaST (the SuSE installer) to partition the HDD.

I suppose that atm all 120GB is partitioned for WinXP?

you'll need to go into advanced options in setup to create custom partions.

Firstly, resize the XP partition to lets say 105GB.
Then Create a Swap partition of 1GB
Then create a Reiser partition of 10GB
Mount the WinXP partition as "win" or "windows"

Hope that helps.

Yeah Yeah show off.

I got it a couple of day's before it even came out. Also got the SuSE United Linux Server 1.0 and SuSE Linux Server 8.0 and Novell Enterprise Linux Services all in a sweet complimentary package called a notebook travel bag that is also stacked with some other goodies. 8)

Use the installer. It has a verry naaise interface that can kinda do it for you depending on what you want. NOTE if you want a NTFS partition in there somewhere better create it with XP/2k first before trying to create any other linux partitions.

i used the windows tool.

all you need to do is find out how much you want to allocate to windows and the rest SUSE will use.

i made a mistake and didnt format the 55gb and suse wanted to use tht for the installation.

It looks like you may have some problems with ATi drivers and Linux, judging by what I've read on the net.

Google search :-

http://www.google.com/search?q=suse+ATi ... 8&oe=utf-8

The only thing I can suggest is to use the standard vesa drivers, but that doesn't help much if you want to play games.

Wish I could help more, but I've never had an ATi card and installing the Nvidia drivers can be hard enough at first ! - see my general rant link above :)

WHoooo!!! finally got my SUSE 9.1 disc and i installed away

i don't give a rat's bottom what they say SUSE is far easier than Mandrake (based on experience i got mandrake 10).

2.6 kernel kicks bottom no more sound issues, evrything worked first time
and KDE 3.2 oh my gosh wat can i say gob smacking fantastic.

i'd definately recommend it.

i also got slackware been meaning to install tht too but i have no knowledge on text based installs

any help.
