Post by ||Console|| »

Ok i have a question Why is there alot of people out there that beat me by @ least 4k points on 2001 but then i beat in 2003 ?
is it because im using driectx9 ? and they using 8 for the bench for 2001 ?

It has to do with the fact that 3DMark 2k1 relies quite heavily on processor power, so while you might have a worse processor than your friend, but your gfx card compensates for that in 3Dmark 2003...

Assasin has hit the nail on the head. With my system (3200xp/1024DDR400/x800Pro256), I can get over 11260 in 3d03 (no4 in SA), which puts me right near the top of the SA lists... however, in 3d01 I can't even make the top ten. Similarly, Firestar with his 6800GT can make 12k in 3d03 (no2 in SA), but has a terrible 3d01 score. Our Athlon XP CPU's hold us back in 3d01 because it's CPU limited.

Again, you might have the same mobo and cpu, but your graphics cards make a huge difference.
when in doubt, paddle out... ;)

I get such a high score in 3dmark due to two things:

1. An awesome 3d card (x800 Pro 256mb IceQ II) with a high OC (550/550)

2. A good benchmarking 'approach'

It's amazing what difference you can get through tweaking windows, tweaking drivers, closing processes, using different OS's, using different drivers, tweaking the bios and keeping your memory timings as tight as possible will make to your benchmark scores.

Policy: If I am understanding you correctly, your friend has the same motherboard, a slower CPU, the same video card but scores better in 2001 than you do, and worse in 2003?

Firstly, how identical are the boards? Same brand and chipset and model? Secondly, what CPU's have you guys both got? and what video card?

Finally, my guess is that it's a configuration and set up difference. His OS install may be 'cleaner' than yours, while your drivers may be more sorted. 3d01 is limited by your CPU subsystem - so on your PC, some config to do with that is slowing you down. While 3d03 is more balanced - so it's showing a more accurate score.

Guys you're also forgetting that 3dmark 01 is a DX 8 benchmark and 3dmark 03 is a DX 09 benchmark. If Console || has a Geforce FX 5200 and his buddy has a Geforce 4 ti, then the ti would beat the FX 5200 in 3dmark 2001 because of its clock speeds, but the FX5200 would beat the Geforce 4 in 3dmark 2003 because of its direct X 9 capabilities.

Good point Kenobi.... although I think a ti4200 would kill the fx 5200 in 3dmark 03 aswell :P
