Wireless Internet in Cape Town

Post by Mechano »

Heya Peepes. Anyone know of a Wireless Internte Service Provider in Cape Town. These must not include www.nettek.co.za or www.wirelessonline.co.za as they do not cover my area. I'm a first year IT student and I really need internet. Dial-up is not an option cos I move around some times. Please HELP!!!

Anybody have Sentech myWireless? I'm keen to get it, just wanna know if anybody has experienced any problems with the service, ie. disconnections, erratic speed downloads. There must be a catch somewhere.

How much extra did the antenna cost?

http://www.wo.co.za - Cape Town based wireless internet. I'm considering signing up with them soon. A friend is already using them and seems happy so far. They are pretty cheap too.

The way I understand it ... and I keep reading this ... is Sentech is the ONLY LEGAL operator. And once they are running the others will be forced to shut down :?

That is what I had read. And the guys are very sure about that. I will wait for Sentech. If Tygerberg area is next ... then I should be soon as well :D

Apparently uniNet are legal and won't be brushed aside when Sentec complete thier rollout because they do not use the same technology as Sentec, here's a response from one of thier employee's:
1) Is your service legal? I have read that Sentech are the only legal WIFI
providers and that once they become fully functional over the whole country,
that all >other providers will be shut down.

Yes our service is legal, and no Sentech is not the only legal Wi-Fi
provider in the country. Sentech MyWireless does not use Wi-Fi.
can anyone confirm this and/or have a better/cheaper solution for high speed internet besides Sentec (not out in my area yet) in Cape Town (Constantia) the option I am considering from uninet is a 128kb connection with contention ratio 1:10 --> R599 a month.
