Outlook - Relay access denied'

Post by doo_much »

Interesting one.

Busy installing some software on a laptop and e-mailed the supplier from it.

Received the following message:
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: License
Sent: 2012/01/26 03:40 PM

The following recipient(s) cannot be reached:

'Joseph Bloggs' on 2012/01/26 03:40 PM
Server error: '554 5.7.1 <jbloggs@somedomain.co.za>: Relay access denied'
Google says there is something wrong with the SMTP authentication (or something like that). Which is all good and well, but we haven't changed any of the settings on the client (Outlook).

The only thing that is different afaik is that the laptop normally connects via ADSL and here it is on my office LAN and connects through a shared 3G connection.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Your ADSL ISP's SMTP server is configured to only relay mail sent from the ISP's assigned IP address range, and disallow mails originating from anywhere else (such as your 3G provider's IP address range). Blame the countless e-mail spammers out there for this.

There's nothing you can do to "fix" this; you will need to send mail through an alternate SMTP server when on the 3G connection.

(There can be other causes of SMTP error 554, but from the information you provided, my answer is probably the most likely one.)

Thanks UberAdmin.
I have 2 other PCs on the LAN I can send mail with - and there's always my ISP's webinterface - so as I said, this is just interesting.
However.
After pressing the owner of the laptop a bit he admitted to having a message returned from another domain the other day with one of those 'you are sending us a virus' messages. Amazing what people will not tell you until they really need to isn't it?

Anyway. Another black mark behind Telscum's name then. What's teh use of having a laptop and you're unable to send e-mails from it?

Ah -- in that case, disregard my previous guess.

I did some more research and it seems that Error 554 is typically caused by something in the From: or To: headers that the SMTP server doesn't like. (The IP thing I mentioned earlier would typically be connection timed out/refused, so please disregard my last answer, this is totally wrong!).

For example, take a look at these SMTP logs:

Code: Select all

Mon 2008-10-20 16:11:37: SMTP session terminated (Bytes in/out: 491/319)
In this case, the fact that the sender was on a DNS blacklist was the cause of the 554 error -- 554 is commonly used to tell blacklisted servers to voetsek. Now that you mention the whole virus thing, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the owner on the laptop somehow got on said blacklist.

Another cause would be the SMTP server not trusting the sender domain -- i.e. an MWEB SMTP server may be configured to only send the mails if the From: address is *@mweb.co.za and 554 anything else. Related to (but not the same as) my first hypothesis.

Nada in the 'mooi' Outlook interface.

How the heck does one view the message source in Outlook 2010?

Help says 'Backstage Button' on file menu. I see no such thing...

Note how this has gone from 'interesting' to 'my problem'. :D

OK. Thanks Google. Enabled logging. And got this. Hope I didn't cut anything pertinent.
Does this shed any light for anyone?

In this case it seems you guess was the cause. Laptop was connected to it's 'normal' ADSL yesterday and sends e-mails no problem.

So thanks UberAdmin and FAIL Telkom?

Oooh Doo, just for interest's sake.

You made a comment in the log next to the EHLO statement. This is the first command that an SMTP server expects from a client. There are actually a couple of flavors of SMTP in use and depending on the spelling of this, EHLO or HELO, the version in sue on the client side can be determined by the server.

I had to... needed to code our own SMTP Relay server since the company I worked at at the time was too cheap and too lazy to either open up their current mail server as a relay from a single IP or to actually buy a decent solution.
