Blast from the past!

Post by IcePick88 »

Mods, please move if it should be under another board. :)

So a colleague and I were talking about our first pc's way back. Mine was a old 486 with 4MB memory, 400MB HDD. Running Windows 3.1. Note, there were no CD-ROM and no GFX card and the salesman told my dad that we will never run out of space on the HDD and will never need more ram. :geek:

So I did a bit of digging on the PCF forum under the hardware section and scrolled right back to the first posts and came across these gems:
No budget... other than thoughts below. Could cost between R15,000 & R 30,000 ( ).
Vague specs:
1) DVD CDR Writer Combo. Min 512 DDR Ram (should be FSB 400 MHz? )
2) Already have monitor/s (20" Cornerstone + cmw 17" TFT)
3) Have Microsoft wireless Keyboard & Optical Mouse (might go for Logitech as well tho')
4) What case?
5) What motherboard?
6) Intel 3.2 GHz best for Graphic manipulation (CORELdraw Photopaint etc)?
7) What Graphics Card (is the ATI Radeon 9800 XT really neccessary... see below )
Want it to last at least 2 years before becoming old tech
9) Not all that into gaming... mainly because I get REALLY pissed off when half the games I try and run on my 1 GHz / NVIDIA Riva TNT 64 just won't! So must be able to run EVERYTHING that's available now (and will be in the next 6 months or so)
10) Oh, and it must all be Black!
From the same thread above:
The most expensive one I could build below 30k was a R29504 monster with P4 3.2ghz, 3GB RAM, 2xDVD-CDR-COMBO, 250GB HDD, 17"CRT (even thought you don't need a screen), XP Pro.

Another one:
Best price I can get is R3340.00 exl. Grahpics card...
Asus mobo with AGP 8x with 400/533/800 FSB+ob grahpics/lan/sound
256Mb DDR400
Cdrom
Stiffy
Seagate 40 Gig
330W ATX case
1.8GHZ P4 400 FSB
Keyboard& mouse
Speakers
And the last one:
Hi all
i will finaly get my computer monday rondom 2:00 pm
here is his specs:
Athlon 64bit 3000+
K8T800 neo mothertboard (2x sata,4xusb,6 chanel audio,1000mb/s Lan card on board)
256mb ram 400mhz kingmax (going 2 buy more memory later)
Nvidia Geforce FX 5700 128 mb DDR
40GB Maxtor HDD (going 2 buy a 80GB sata)
17" Monitor
52x32x52 writer
and a lot of fans!!!
I guess the point I'm trying to make is that things have moved along ALOT and these days even our cellphones has higher speed cpu's than some of us had in our very first pc's! :)

Cheers

Have you ever misspoken, only to have someone correct you right away? Are you thankful that the person cared enough to point out your error to everyone within earshot? Some people just can’t resist pointing out other people’s errors, regardless of who’s present and how minuscule the error is.

I once knew someone that would jump at the chance to correct everyone at every chance he could. From grammatical errors to pronunciation mistakes to misspellings in email messages, this guy couldn’t resist adding his two cents and showing everyone how smart he was and how dumb everyone else was. How did people like this person? They hated him.

From elementary school all the way up through adulthood, I’ve come across people that felt the need to correct others. Some had seemingly innocent intentions while others were excited at the opportunity to show everyone present that they were smarter than someone else. Regardless of their intentions, what they’ve accomplished through their corrections has ranged from ticking someone off to ruining a friendship.

Some people get their kicks and feel powerful by cutting others down so this correction can sometimes be considered a form of bullying. Others are honestly trying to help, but just lack the tact for doing it right. And still others are perfectionists and can’t help themselves.
Seems these forum is full of 'em.

Oh crap! I said these! Quick, call the Correct Squad!

once is an honest mistake... twice could possibly be forgiven as a finger error ... when someone habitually uses a word or phrase incorrectly, they cease communicating and begin spouting random nonsense...

not surprisingly, communication is important because it is used to convey discrete packets of information. anyone adding noise to the line should be corrected or shot. as to the quote, i believe the summary would be "Booh..hoo! Nasty person pointed out my imperfect use of language. I'm going to tell my mommy!".

Sorry, but apart from affording rusty a nostaligic opportunity to troll, what is the point of this thread? I'm not trying to be unkind, but we've got lots of these my-first-computer and my-upgrade-history threads floating around. Is this just another one of those?

Nuke it, I couldn't be bothered to search for the exact thread, but I can remember participating in a similar thread a few months back.

yeah. my first pc was a IBM 486 with 4mb ram and a 500 mb HDD. had a sound blaster sound card and CD-rom. With the sound card i got a shareware version of DOOM 1, Warcraft 1, Descent and some other game that i can't remember the name of.

I was so amazed at the technology. that was my PC for a good 7 years of my life. By the time i upgraded i think P4 was just coming out.

Nuke, lock or whatever.

Seems I have made a trillionthe (oops, hope I do not get corrected for it) post and I understand.

@Rusty, spelling alot wrong too many time really is bad for your health or IQ then? WOW. Never knew it. I will keep it in mind and maybe write a thesis on it some day when I have stopped spelling it wrong and my brain cells are back to normal.

Okay, if this is going to turn into another one of those threads, please use one of the existing ones instead. Here, for example.

If it's going to end up as a troll thread, PM jamin instead.
