I'm being spammed by my own email account :|
I've set up a filter on my Gmail account that applies a "Me" label to any emails i send to myself (i do this quite often, to make myself feel special, you know). Anyway, i figured i'd go into my spam folder to see what's up, and what do i find?
Eh? I don't know much about spam, but something is telling me that i need a new Gmail password
What's odd, though, is that all of these things are sex related, but i'm not subscribed to or a member of any such websites
Someone enlighten me please

don't worry even if you change your password you still get those spam messages. i been getting them for years now. i think the persone that sends the messages some how makes the message appear to be from the destination address.

No, you haven't been hacked. It's that the SMTP protocol doesn't care what e-mail address is given to it as the source e-mail address (the destination address does matter though).
This is what typically goes on between your e-mail client and your SMTP server when you click on "Send Mail":
And yes, the SMTP server will be happy and send that out. I could set the board's source e-mail address to "noreply@pcformat.co.za", and any mails sent by the board would still happily go out (although as that e-mail address doesn't exist, no-one would be able to reply).

I have seen Gmail 'rules' (the ones that apply that label) screw up some tags.
It might just be that the spammers are emulating your email address format, and therefor Gmail is reading it as one of your applicable rules ?

ROFL - but they are all geared to "how to make your lady happy". As I am the lady and don't have one of my own - they are pretty useless Now if they sent some hot hunks my way - there would be no complaints

Re: I'm being spammed by my own email account :|
It seems to be the latest thing - I'm getting about 5 messages from myself a day. Also seem to be getting a flood of messages seeming to be from facebook, but which turn out to be "I lost 1000 pounds by cutting of my arm" etc. Don't know if facebook has become lax in allowing spam or more likely someone is spoofing the facebook email address.

Unless you set your mail server to do a check on the domain of the source address E.G @Pcformat.co.zaRon2K wrote:No, you haven't been hacked. It's that the SMTP protocol doesn't care what e-mail address is given to it as the source e-mail address (the destination address does matter though).

there is a name for it but after the holiday i forgot the term.
and do some other checks to see if it is in fact an email server by saying Hello Pcformat.co.za
But i dont think gmail has that enabled cus it might reject legit mail.
I get some mails from my self on my company address which wasnt caught by the spam filter.I dont think its something you have to worry about aslong as gmail is doing its job you should be ok.
BTW you can play some nasty tricks on people changing the from address

When I was playing around with the Java emailing SDK I was messing with another guy at work by spoofing the from field and sending him mail from the FBI and then messages from himself to himself... Stuff like "What you want?" and "Why you mailing me, get back to work!". He thought he had a virus until he saw that I was laughing at him and then he caught on.
