Large files doesn't copy

Post by Pikkie »

Hello all.

Im having a bit of a problem with my external hard drive. There is an 8gig file on it which I need on my internal hard drive.
Problem is that it stops copying after 10% and never resumes. Anybody have any idea what cause this ? There are no errors.

Thanks in advance.

Are you running Vista or XP?

I've seen with Vista that sometimes copies hangs. Weird, but don't know the solution. We always just cancel the copy and start it again.

Your external hard drive. Is that a 2.5" or 3.5"? I have a 2.5" portable drive, and have two usb cables that plug into the pc. One just for power, and then other for power and data. If I plug only the one in, the copy takes forever, but as soon as I plug the "power" usb cable in, the copy is lekka.

Try that.

FAT32 limitation issue, bog standard USB xfer limit issue or the external drive is overheating....

If it is a normal spindle and platter drive it's NTFS, seeing as they are not solid state. So I don't think that FAT32 is the issue. Unless the drive is formatted with FAT32.

if it were pre-formatted... if it's a bog-standard external housing + drive, then the format is whatever the user picked... i choose never to assume...

would also represent if the internal is FAT32...

there again, we're spit-balling until Pikkie responds...

Sorry for only replying now guys, was kinda busy today.
Here is the info requested:
2.5" vizo shuttle with 40gb fujitsu drive in
XP professional 32bit
Both power and power+data cable is plugged in.
I assume its formatted with NTFS but cannot be sure.
Drive can't be overheating as I start the copy as soon as its plugged in and it stops within 5 minutes.

Hey there Pikkie! :)

To see if it is formatted in NTFS, go to Computer Managemet (Right click "My Computer", "Manage") and go down to Disk Management. In there it will list the drives and what filesystem it uses.
But I think that's not your problem.

40gb is quite old. Maybe the drive is on it's way out? Download an application called Hard Drive Inspector. It's a 15 day trail and with it, you can see if the drive is faulty. It might be that the 8gb file is written over some bad sectors, and no the drive cannot read from them.

Does it do it with only that file or any other large files? I would suggest, copy a similar in size file to the drive and try and copy it back to the pc. See if the same thing comes up?

You know guys - you're assuming that the source HDD is FAT32. If the type of file system is indeed the culprit, the destination HDD is where you should be looking.

Had a guy in the office that tried copying a 7GB file to his 8GB flash drive, and was wondering while it was failing - was because his flash was FAT32.

Did you try a different PC to see if it atleast copies more than 10% maybe like 50% ?

Download Burst copy or total copy and see if that works ?

But check the drive FS first, I think your external is NTFS cus how did it get to 7Gigs in the first place.
