Sorry for the thread-jack, but what sort of noticeable effect can a motherboard have on overall system performance? I built my PC on a budget and opted to go for (what I consider) decent parts but I did skimp on the Mobo slightly, I opted for a Gigabyte G31 Express chipset.

Check my sig for my other specs but I just feel that I'm not getting the oomph that I should be getting at the mo. If I should upgrade, do I go for a P35 chipset or an Nforce chipset?

Sadly the P5Q hasn't seen the light of South African day yet. Believe me ... I've been waiting for it.

Lol, if I had 50c for every P5N32E-SLi user that has had it with Asus ...

The Biostar does look like a fairly decent buy. You should perhaps consider the DFI too. They should be here fairly soon, if they aren't already.

As a matter of interest, I previously had the Gigabyte P35-DQ6 motherboard. I got the Asus P5Q Deluxe but am still waiting for my HD4870 graphics card. Not wanting to reformat, install drivers for my Nvidia, then remove them and install ATI drivers when the card arrives, I thought I'd take a chance and just try booting into Windows without formatting or doing a repair installation or anything. And, what do you know? It worked! 8O Booted straight into Vista on the new chipset, so I just removed old drivers and am using the same installation. I will format when my GFX arrives, but I thought it was interesting to have Windows work fine on motherboard with a new chipset and by a completely different manufacturer.

Would not have worked in XP . WPA would have errored cause the build ID would not have matched your registeration id .

On performance , propably not much . But your overclocking is serverely hampered by sub-par boards. P45 ftw

But I see that board doesn't have pci-e x16, it is only an 8x port?

Or is that only the link speed if you are going XFire? :?:

Bollocks!!! I had the GA-M55SLI-S4 mobo with an AMD 6400+ X2 running on XP, then uninstalled all drivers. I then bought the P965 from Schase and stuck it in my case switched my pc on, booted into Windows XP and installed the drivers. One time!!

That is interesting. Until this time I have always, without exception, had to at least do a repair installation when changing chipsets. That's why I was so surprised this time.

I think in a past Issue of PCF there was a walkthrough on the subject, or maybe it was an Ask Luis rant.

Can I bring this thread back up and in true South African fashion, hijack to some point.

I want to know what the benefit of me upgrading to a P35 mobo would be in terms of overall system performance. I currently have an ok system (see sig) but want to know how much the mobo I have (G31 Express) hampers system performance overall. It says that FSB up to 1333Mhz is supported but am I getting the most out of my core-2-duo? I don't want to OC btw, the 6550 is fast enough for me ino.

If you're not going to overclock, then it's not going to make a difference whether you have a P35 or G31 mobo. The P35 will probably have some extra features, but nothing that will drastically improve performance running at stock.

Awesome, thanks schase, that's all I wanted to know as then I'd rather put that cash towards a 22" flat or an 8800gt.

Ahem ... do the 8800GT first, m'kay? Or ...better yet ... an HD4850.
