CDRW LED Mod - SATA

Post by PsYnaNoTiC »

Hey guys

Remember Dae_Ja_Voo's LED mod in the writer?

Any Idea how to do it on a SATA drive?

I striped the thing not thinking that I,ve got a sata drive.

Any help? Urgently... keep in mind I don't have my multimeter with me, it's at work.

Thanks!

A DMM is always a must when working on electronics dude.

Djv tried to do mine, but it rendered the rom useless. BUT I belive someone else found a way to do it, Rob I think, not sure though.

I suppose I can route a piece of wire from the back directly to the power cable and get my power from there.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think all you need to find is 12V and ground? :)

Yup, I'm just going to take 2 cat5 strands through the back and connect it to the power cable. Only crap with that is that I'll have to cut the wire if I want to remove the writer. Luckely we don't do that to often now do we :)

Fiber Optics found the problem.

I DID try the mod, on Mike's writer, as he says, but while it was wired, the writer refused to work. Once i undid the mod, the writer worked.

The problem was that i was drawing all the power from one of the 12V lines, and i think the lines just cant handle all the load. Fiber Optics drew the power from two of the lines and that solved the problem altogether :)

I never bothered trying because all my writers were already modded :P

I think it's actually better, to make a permanent switch for the LED's running off 12V via a Molex, with that you can actually disable the LED's if you don't want them on anymore!

I think the mod is causing crap

Post by PsYnaNoTiC »

Ok.... so I'm trying to write some dvd's, 1 out of 5 works and it is dual layer's....EXPENSIVE! F###

If i look at the write side of the dvd; you can see how it started to write, skipped a section, wrote again, stoped, etc

You guys think the light of the l.e.d's is causing k@k with the laser?

Nope, the LEDs have no effect whatsoever.

It's probably your writer. I have a Samsung SATA writer as well and it's useless. Samsung drives in general are pretty crap.

I have an Asus drive in one of my machines too, a SATA one. Great writer. I've had it for ages and it hasn't given me any problems :)

+1 on the samsung is da shaaits...

I've had 4 samsung drives all fail within 3 months. then I decided go LG. That lasted about a year then it just failed to close ever again (closes, but auto ejects again) then I thought, try LiteON. Been happy ever since. (that does not include the one that I broke due to DJV's LED mod. )

I have had too many LG failures....just replaced my wife's one with a Samsung....

Its been ok so far, but disheartening to know they are cr@ppy drives... Seems like optical drives are becoming like stiffy drives....very unreliable.

Is it just me or are pretty much all opti's crap? I've had just about every brand fail randomly on me. The Asus i have now is the only one that seems to be holding out...

I have had LG drives for a while and they tend to last. I still even have an old 32x CDWR drive that is still working VERY well. If I had to replace my drives and could afford it, I would definitely look at Plextor drives as replacements

Wrote more dual layers succesfully, suppose it's my own fault for not spending the extra 50 bucks on better dual layers.

So.... writer and mod works perfectly.
