Linux Freeze I know why not sure how to fix
I'm trying to install a linux distro on my PC.
Not sure what i want to install , but i'm getting there
I installed kubunto it starts up fine but then freezes as soon as i click the desktop, or a menu and so on.
I then booted backtrack 3 and the same happened, then booted Bt3 again
and chose vesa mode.
It seems like kubuntu has nvidia drivers installed.
I dont know how to fix this.
How can i tell it not to use the nvidia drivers but generic ones, i think this happens cus i have unlocked pipelines in my GF6800
anyway, I can get the X config but what do i use to configure it.
Xfree86Config dont work, its case sensitive so i'm close.
xconf dont work xorgsetup and xorgconfig also dont work.
Please help.
Is Kubunto worth it ? i dont like gnome btw so ubunto not going to work.
where do i get XGL ?

But i want to post here! it PC format after all. The on place where problems is easy to solve (Well sometimes)g0ldback wrote:Why go for the KDE enviroment? Gnome is much more powerful and you can just skin it to look like KDE or something
As for the problem you're having, it seems like Linux isn't able to pick up something correctly. Try post it on the Ubuntu forums and see if anyone else has had the same problem
Not to worry,I will sort it out. i will get the Xconfig file from Fedora some how or off the net and see how it uses generic drivers then use vm or pico or what ever or
WINDOWS and copy to a FD then copy over the existing one.
or something like that
I've had a similar problem before. Used one of these to get the VESA drivers to take over then installed Restricted nVidia drivers.
to renconfig X manually:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
reset X back to default :
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
edit: kde pwned gnome long ago su-noobs

Code: Select all
init 3
Code: Select all
vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf
change Driver "nv" to Driver "vesa" then once you're in X, then run restricted driver manager and enable nvidia restricted drivers.
If that doesn't work then you're stuck with vesa drivers.
*EDIT: Or use simmy's way, it'll be easier

Dunno what that has got to do with this though.
My PC gets shut down on a daily basis , that counts a s a reboot so in other words you saying i get laid every day
sudo dpkg -reconfigure xserver-xorg doesnt work.
Sudo i think is to run something in admin or root mode or something ?
dpkg is a package manager. -reconfigure is a invalid command.
you can run sudo dpkg -configure xserver-xorg but then it says xserver-xorg
already installed and configured.
vi is a dog , I cant figure out how to edit and save the files.
i booted off backtrack again, and used a GUI Text editor to edit xorg.conf
but now the system just hangs before x starts.

ok then run
For vi, to edit a file, press "insert", to save, press "Esc" then type :wq (w for write, q for quit. If it has a write permission problem then type :wq! )
what does your xorg.conf file look like now?
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg -reconfigure -phigh xorg-server
