GC 2006: StarCraft 2 Hints Dropped?
Is StarCraft 2 currently in the works? What other titles does Blizzard have stashed away for both PC and console?
by Tal Blevins
August 24, 2006 - While our meeting with Blizzard Chief Operating Officer Paul Sams today at the German Games Convention mainly focused on The Burning Crusade, the upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft, we did ask him about what the future holds in store for Blizzard, and specifically about StarCraft 2.
"StarCraft is my absolutely favorite game of all time," Sams told us. "As you probably already know, there is no doubt that we will continue the StarCraft and Diablo franchise, and trust me, I will be the happiest person in the world when we announce StarCraft 2."
While Sams wasn't ready to spill the beans just yet, he did say Blizzard "will have a major product announcement in 2007," and that Blizzard was currently working on at least three other unannounced titles at the moment.
In terms of what these games could be, we asked if they would fall in line with the major success Blizzard has had with World of Warcraft. "I want to be clear that we're not just content to be an MMO company," Sams explained. "Some other companies get into the role of making just MMOs, but Blizzard lets the developers pick what they want to work on, and it's not all MMOs."
When asked about StarCraft: Ghost, Sams said that it was on indefinite hold, but that Blizzard wasn't averse to exploring further console development in the future. "We've been up to MS and they've been at our office talking about Vista and 360," Sams said, "and we're certainly excited about some of the tools they have to offer in the console world as well as with Vista and DirectX 10. However, with our own online gaming service, we're going to pick and choose what we want to use; we're going to protect Battle.net and make sure Battle.net ranks supreme."
I for one was always, back in the Starcraft+Broodwar days, pondering bout how I would like to see Jim Raynor get revenge on Kerrigan, or maybe even find a way to 'save' her from the Zerg Infestation...
Hope this is one of the big titles they talking bout...
That's cus it is kinda fake. It looks like the StarCraft conversion pack for WarCraft 3 that is busy being made (by a third-party, not Blizzard).
I can't remember the link to the page, but I have definitely seen it. Sorry to burst your bubble, but that video isn't actually StarCraft 2, just a conversion using the WarCraft 3 engine.
BTW, StarCraft is one of the best games ever!
*EDIT*
I've just looked at that video closely, and that video actually seems to be a conversion for C&C Generals, NOT WarCraft 3. Or at least it's using the C&C Generals Engine.

With the Warcraft editor there is a hidden Zerglin and Hydralisk
So i built this map where you have to kill all of them it was quite fun
Blizzard blew a huge load of cash developing a FPS game called Starcraft: Ghost about 4 years ago.
They had practically developed the game, even had a few demo's and playable levels. But then there were a few issues and Blizzard abandoned the whole project.
I think if SC does come back, it will be this game, revamped for the new-gen systems. Although Ghost was a console game (XBox IIRC) - so not good news for PC gamers...

I doubt it, Starcraft Ghost was canned for a reason, although I don't know why. The next starcraft game IMO will be the RTS, Starcraft 2
I hope they fuse RTS elements and FPS gameplay into one like Pandemic did with Battlezone. Starcraft 2 will have a lot to live up to and adding some new dimensions to the 'RTS' genre would be a welcome change imo.
I don't think StarCraft 2 should be made. Ever. It would spoil the memory of the original game because no matter how hard they try or how awesome it looks they wouldn't be able to capture the spirit of the original SC. That is the one componenent they always screw up in sequels and remakes. The spirit of the game.
Just when I got the hang of life they changed the rules.

Not always. Half life 2, Diablo II (also blizzard), Dune 2 all captured the feeling of the original and surpassed it. But I will sort of agree with you and say most sequels don't live up to scratch. I don't think they will make StarCraft 2 soon. Too much money being made on their cash cow, WoW. Maybe World of Starcraft will follow, hehe.
June 13, 2006 - A sequel to Starcraft is right at the top of many gamers' "Please, God, Make This Happen" list. Well, the Lord works in mysterious ways. If not a true sequel, gamers may be getting some more Starcraft action after all.
According to F13.net during a presentation to Wall Street today, a company representative from Vivendi reportedly said, "All Blizzard franchises will become MMOGs." The rep said they have a model in place to produce an MMOG for $50 million over the next three years.
World of Warcraft is one of the great success stories of our time. The big question is: with WoW already sucking hours/weeks/years of gamers' lives away, how will we ever find time to play World of Starcraft or World of Diablo? Alas, that these evil days should be ours!

Warcraft 3?
Implement RPG elements and it's too different. Leave the RPG elements and it's too cookie-cut.
