PC does not want to switch off!

Post by cyrus_bsc »

Hi All!!

I hope I'm posting in the right forum.

I have a problem with my pc. I just put everyting together and when I switched in on, the fans started turning, the lights and everything came on. However, the screen stayed black and there were no error beeps at all. So then I decided to switch it off, but after holding the power button in continously, nothing happened?!? I had to pull the cable out the back! Then, I removed everything except my CPU and reconnected power and switched it on again and I still did not get any error beeps. And it still did not want to switch off using the power button. I have checked the front panel connectors and it is connected in the right way on the mobo.

The system is a GIGABYTE 8I945P-G-RH mobo
P4 Core Duo 2.13
Corsair 1GB DDR2 mem
500W PSU
and all the rest.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Cy.

Double check the power connectors on the motherboard

Ok. Let me add this as well. I am using a 20 to 24pin converter. But even when I only plug in the 20pin onto the mobo the same happens. :?

It may be that your PSU doesn't give enough power to the mobo. Could you get it tested with a more powerful/expensive PSU.

I took out the ram as well. It's only the cpu that is in at the moment.

Yes, but the mobo might not like your PSU. What make and model is the PSU?

Your PC won't switch on if there isn't RAM installed...

Won't the fans still come on? Because that is what's happening at the moment?

Are your IDE cables plugged in the correct way around, (the red strip on the correct side), because that is exactly what happens when they are not (although it may be a number of other problems, I would check that first) Also did you plug in the extra 12V 4 pin connector into the board?

cyrus bsc --> Are you sure you plugged the 4-pin PSU lead (I dont really know what its called) as well? Failing to do so will cause the symptom you described.

If you don't get a beep at all, it could be about anything. The motherboard could be dead, the CPU could be fried, the reset button could be stuck. ANYTHING really. So take out the motherboard and CPU and RAM from the case, install it on a table barely and then try and see if you maybe can swop out parts.

Hehe!! Yup, if I had error beeps....

The 4 pin connector is plugged in as well. I think I'm gonna get another psu and have a go and if that fails I will replace the mobo. I will let you guys know!

Thanks for all the replies!! I really appreciate it very much!

It might be that the board has an old BIOS version which doesn't support Core 2 Duo. Gigabyte doesn't even list a BIOS version for Core 2 Duo on that board.

Oh my word!

So I'm gonna have to swop it around for a different one. Do you think that they will accept it? :) .

I'll see what I can do.

Thanks once again!
