I need some help with cooling..

Post by vectaman »

Ive just got myself a new PC but im concerned with the temperature of the CPU as I havent even overclocked it yet!! 8O I have a Pentium D 805 2.66GHz CPU running off a Zalman CNPS7700Cu cooler in an Antec Overture II case. The CPU temp is idling at the moment at 51 degrees C and all Im doing is typing this post! To me this sounds a bit high. Can anybody shed some light on the subject?

You know this is what Ive been wondering cuz the place I bought my chassis, cpu mobo and cooler from did me a 'favour' by installing those components for me even though I didnt say I wanted it done. I installed the rest of the parts on Friday and had it up and running just this weekend so what Im gonna do is phone these okes tomorrow and ask if the paste was used. You think this is probably the reason for the temp? I seem to think so.

Well yeah. I'd also take the Cooler off...re-apply paste and securely place it back on

What cooler is on there? Usually, the stock stuff comes with some bubblegum already on the bottom... they probably used that...

The 800 series does run very hot. But the motherboard might not be reporting the correct temp (can be out by as much as 10'C). Only way to know for sure is to measure with a temp probe. Or use the "touch" test.

Hmm, the best thing about Intels is that they are "2 in 1s" as they are a CPU and a heater....also they have a hidden feature....you OC it and it turns into an OVEN!! Truley amazing... soz

Well definatly remove the Zalman CNPS 7700Cu, clean the heatsink and then apply some more thermal paste and make sure its fitted properly. if the temps are still high...then you have a bit or a prob... :D

Isopropyl alcohol - available from your local chemist. Don't use rubbing alcohol, it's not as pure.

actually guys its better to use acetone to clean the heatsinks and heatspreaders - thats the stuff they make nail polish remover with - and if you can find non-scented nail polish remover it works just as well

the alcohol is nowhere as near as good to remove any form of thermal compound - but the 90% medical stuff is okay if you want to use alcohol - but it doesnt break down the thermal compound as well as acetone

you will find bottles of acetone for around R10 at hardware shops

I got myself the Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste and the ArctiClean Remover and Purifier set to clean the heatsink. I cleaned the heatsink and re-appilied the paste 5 days ago. Im using Everest for the temp monitoring and it now says that my CPU is idling at 47. I ran a system stability test and the CPU does not go higher than 64 deg. C. The thermal paste made a difference of only 4 deg. C, and I did go about cleaning the proper way. Am I safe for overclocking?

normally the top overclockers say that if you overclock your temp sould be 50 overclocked,
so I think 47 is actually the temp it should be overclocked

So what you're saying then is that my CPU is running way too hot then. So what can I do to fix this?

It's not running way to hot,
it's actually nice and cool for the kind of CPU you have

What I'm saying is that you'll need way better cooling before you attemp to overclock,
or you can overclock and just reduce the life span of your CPU

Are you going for a 24/7 overclock or a benching overclock?

4'C is a big difference for simply changing the TIM.

As I said before, the reading is most likely incorrect. Try updating the bios.

I'm going for a permanent overclock. I've downloaded a bios update, but I've never done one before. Any pointers on how to go about it? By the way Iceblade, what do you mean when you say its cool for the CPU I have? You telling me that they run this hot? How do you know this?

You should use the Asus utility to flash your BIOS, I'm told it's pretty good. Just be careful to flash it with the right BIOS for your motherboard, otherwise your computer won't boot.

Also try get hold of a UPS. If the power goes out while you're updating the bios, it could kill the motherboard - and we all know how reliable Eskom is.

Also disable any backround programs such as anti-virus.

EDIT: Download this: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/CPU- ... atch.shtml then go to Intel's website and try and find out the temperature at which your particular processor throttles. Stress the CPU and see if it throttles. Comparing this to the temperature should give you an idea as to how accurate the reading is.

The website says that its thermal specification is 64.1°C. What does this mean?
