In this day and age of pathes I can live with the product not being perfect. Besides I am pretty sure if the developers had their way the game wouldn't be released untill it's ready but we know publishers want to released in time for the holiday season so it got rushed.

I agree with rustypup.

This looks like another SW:KOTOR2 **** to me.

Look how soon after release two patches have been issued. Not even mentioning that long list of fixes.

It's because most gamers seemingly share your attitude that were fed this crap.

"I am pretty sure..." / ROFL.

I hate to be the one to burst your bubble, but I'm going to anyway, so listen-up - they evidently don't care about you or me.

If they did, gamers would have been playing a working, fully compatible tried and tested game of the shelf.

The developers do care why else would they continue to support the product after it's released?? It's the publishers who don't care and force an early release since they must meet the holiday season deadline and don't care if the product isn't ready.

the word i'm thinking of is censored.. .

if just one or two of their titles went through these "teething" pains i would say this statement may be true... the fact that ALL of their titles have had similar problems says, quite clearly, they couldn't care less... as long as their market continues to tolerate their ineptitude, they have no reason to improve matters....

take CDV with breed.. CDV make excellent product, but breed was possibly one of the biggest x-ups in gaming history... i will still purchase CDV games, because their track record speaks to a professional team... jowood, ascaraon and their ilk not so much...

<realises how far OT this has become...> - apologies

Off topic but tell which rpg in the last year from any developer has come out which hasn't needed a patch very soon?? I am sure you will find very few not needing patches.

Interfan wrote:which rpg in the last year from any developer has come out which hasn't needed a patch very soon?
games being patched to correct one or two flaws in play-balancing, maybe some graphical glitches and the occasional CTD, fine.... games requiring a patch or two to run at all, (which is one of jowood's specialities), are indicative of bad devlopment, plain and simple... amazingly i had almost zero issue with wow, titan quest, oblivion, (among others)

they are using their customers as beta testers... this is not the crazed imaginings of a diseased mind... this is the foregone conclusion of simple observation of their track record. they feel comfortable in plugging their half-baked wares in the sure and certain knowledge that their "sap" base will tell them where things are not quite finished yet...

as consumers, we need to demand better. the relationship only works when we are actively encouraging the developer to sell finished goods.

unless you habitually purchase a new car and wait a few months for the engine to turn up in your mail, you cannot help but wonder why this relationship should be any different. why hand over premium price for incomplete product, and then spend time and effort telling the manufacturer which bits are missing/not working?... how is this a healthy state of affairs?...

i'll stick to my method of voting... burn me once, lose me as a customer...

This is getting wayoff topic but lets continue. Gothic does run just very poorly without the patch. Obviously we all would prefer the game to be perfect when it gets released and not need any patch. But the facts are this they are very few genuine rpg's being made hence the reason I will support the likes of gothic and never winter nights even with their bugs. If it weren't for these companies we would be stuck with hack and slash rpg's and actions games with some character development .

You can't seriously compare a car to a game. A car can't run without an engine Gothic runs just very poorly without the patch hence big difference.

yes you can.. in the same way that you expect your newly purchased car to have an engine, you can expect the software you purchased off the shelf to be a complete representation thereof... not wait around while the balance is supplied to you after the fact..

this is so far OT i think i'll bow out now... my mind cannot tolerate the concept of "maybe they'll get it working with the next patch" as being an acceptable approach to dismal service, and no amount of debate will change that...

True, true.
All reviews I've seen so far don't put JoWood games in a very rosy light (re patching). Except for the SpellForce series that tried something new.

I will take those reviews with a pinch of salt. They gave gothic 2 bad reviews while for many people who played the game it was an excellent game.

Ok guys having the game now here are my thoughts. With the patch installed and all it isn't nearly as buggy as some have claimed I have played for 2 hours now with no crashes. Not one. I am playing on medium settings. It does get choppy in some areas occasionally but this can be put down to the fact that my current system only has 1 gig of ram.

It's still very playable. The story and rest of the game is excellent.

I can defenitly recommend this game.
