What graphic card?

Post by Barrymore »

I have a LGA775 1066FB main board.
Intel pentium dual core.
Memory - Dual channel DDRII 667.
PCI Express
Processor - 2.2GHZ
When I bought this PC I also bought a spare board
so when the existing board packs up in a few years time
I'll be in a position to replace it. Therefore, I need to
stock up on spare Ram now while it's still available.
Hopefully my existing setup will be in use for a number of
years. Because of this I want to install a graphic card
that will still perform in years to come.
Can someone please recommend a card that will be
compatible with the above board specs?
Obviously it will need to support DX 10.
I was thinking in terms of the XFX GeForce 8800GT 512MB.
What I am not sure about is that this card is DDR3 while
the board supports DDR2. Does this matter.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

A graphics card uses GDDR and not DDR. The specs of your supported motherboard RAM has got nothing to do with the graphics card memory..

I am somewhat confused by the two posts above.
From badguy:
"Yes you can not put DDR3 in the mboard But you can put A grapichcard with ddr 3 in. " The first sentence tells me NO, the next tells me YES.

The 9600GT is also DDR3.

To Wikid: Based on what you have sais, can I use the 8800GT DDR3 card?
Thanks guys.

Yes, as long as you have a PCI-e slot the card will work fine. Badguy is a cake :)

And the 8800GT is better than the 9600GT.

I am surprised no one has recommended the ATI HD4850 to you yet. It is cheaper and faster than the 8800GT.

As long as you have a PCI-E 16x slot, you can run any PCI-E 16x graphics card. PCI-E v2.0 is interchangeable with PCI-E v1.0

Didn't think of that. I would also recommend the HD4850

Hi,
WikId state"And the 8800GT is better than the 9600GT."
From what I have read I must agree, but it costs much more.

ATI HD4850 - thanks for this - I will check it out, but have not seen it
in the shops or advertised here in Durbs.

It was only released last week, and is probably only coming into the country tomorrow, so give it a little while.

That explains why it is missing from Rectron's price list. Thanks.
Reading up on this card - two negatives I picked up-
It runs at a pretty high temp.
It's a bit power hungry.

Id go for the HD4850 :D
It performs quite a bit better then the 8800GT and id rather have a card that performs better, runs a tad bit hotter and seriously now...the card isnt that power hungry. :D
