Defender isnt a AV its a spyware detector... It works for me, but you have to schedule scans... If your looking for some good free AV software, you can try AVG or Avast... Ive used both and they are just as good as each other....

Using it atm, will upto SP1 release, then won't ever again.

Btw you don't need to enable schedueld scans in Defender. Update it, scan and then disable scheduled scans, it's real-time protection.

Defender is a load of rubbish-had so many issues with it.
Rather use Spybot with 'teatimer' and switch from IE7 to firefox.
I have had no spyware for the 3 months since I have used the fox for browsing.

Additional:
Actually a lot of my friends rate Avast as one of the best antivirus ever but I use AVG.

Also if I was you, MANIAC, get Zone alarm as well. The stock firewalls provided by windows are also rubbish. They are only a one way firewall and block all in coming attacks (if it can) but lets all out going traffic run freely. Zone alarm is know to be reliable.
It won't take away that much performance from your PC either.

Im currently still using McAfee(expires soon), which is ok. I would like to get ZAlarm but as mensioned it does not work with VSP1(can I get this now already???)

ZA will get update soon, they should atleast. I`ll wait till then.

Avast or AVG :? / I may not even get this as I have come into some cash and just buy one(Mc2008)...

no... you wouldn't.

if you're not into paying for stuff:
firewall: Comodo
AV:Avast or Antivir
Adware: Spybot S&D, Adaware or a-squared, (a-sqaured update service has an expiry)

if you're sensible and spend a little dosh:
firewall: Outpost
AV: NOD32, Kaspersky

microsoft has had many stabs at malware protection... with abysmal results... mcafee is not much better...
