bondi, I understand what you are saying, but the logic does not follow through that only one competitor in a market will achieve the "network effect", and the others will dissapear. It is possible for multiple competitors to achieve this effect, as in the automobile industry.
Furthermore I don't think the network effect is a necessity of survival. Again refering to cars, take a look at Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Porsche...etc. Now you can point out that all these companies are owned by ones that have achieved the effect. But you do not see a Rolls Royce or Ferrari dealership on every corner like say Toyota. And these companies are still alive and kicking! They cater to a select part of the public, who do not like to buy products with a service centre on every corner.
No I am not ascociating Apples to Ferraris (you know i would never do that ), but just pointing out that the "network effect" is not neccessary for a company to survive, or even thrive in the world.

With all the moves apple are making, I can only guess that they are geeting ready to seriously get back onto every desk possible. We here in SA will probably be the last to see it sadly. Its also cool that they are getting into other markets like with the iPod and of course iTunes. sure not everyone likes it but I prefer it to any other music player out there. The fact that I can use it on my Apple or on my PC I also love the way it simply finds other shared music on the network. I can see more and more people move over to apple in the next couple of years the guys at Apple just have to keep focused. Hey maybe we to will get an iTMS here in South Africa.
Tex was taken so Default it is....

I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes.
