nVidia 6800XT vs 6800LE

Post by ElDiablo »

I'm looking to buy a decent graphics accelerator card for an old pc that my girlfriend will be using to play sims 2...

I've got the following options:

nVidia GeForce 6800LE
256Bit - 128Mb - agp 8x
R1021

nVidia GeForce 6800XT
64bit - 128Mb - agp 8x
R438

She's currently using an nVidia 6600 Vanilla,
The 6800XT has an attractive price and unlockable pipes, but the 64bit memory interface is puzzling me, will this card be better than a 6600 vanilla, or should I rather go for the 6800LE and unlock a few pipes?

Will a 64bit memory interface vs 256bit actually make such a huge difference?

Another thing, does anybody have an old 6600GT, 6800LE/Vanilla/GT that they want to get rid of?

Very true, the standard XT has a 256bit memory interface, but this one that I want to buy (as seen here ) -> http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/produc ... s_id=14044

only has a 64bit bus

k, will do

does anybody else have an idea if the 64bit bus on the 6800xt will have a huge performance hit?

I can't give a thesis but I always read reviews where lesser bits suck.
Rather go for 256 or more.

I've got the 6800LE AGP in my other rig and had to get a PCI Express card when I got my new PC. It's the 7300GS and it's only got a 64bit pipeline.
ITS TERRIBLE!!!
The 6800 kicks it's bottom so far it's not even funny.

My advice is stay away from 64bit pipelines. It can be the fastest card on the market but if it only has a 64bit pipeline it's USELESS. Way too much of a bottleneck.

Go with the 6800LE. A really nice card. I'm missing it alot!

P.S. I really can't stress enough how bad 64bit pipelines are. Seriously, stay away. :stern:

The 64-bit memory interface is HORRIBLY slow.

DO NOT get a card that has anything less than a 128-bit memory interface. Even then, it's really pushing it.
