Bottom line means i remain screwed. WHy aren't there disclaimers about possible imcompatibilities among certain components?

If it is indeed the psu I'd have learnt something new! Sorry if I wasn't paying attention but has it been run outside of the case?

Not yet, I'm too tired to try and build it out and in again. Im taking it back to Asus tomorrow and hope they can figure it out.

But Asus said they tested it at their premises with another board as well. So your houses earth isn't the problem. The PSU maybe. Not the case. The p-o-w-e-r s-u-p-p-l-y
that's what I am thinking -emi.

look, all sorts of funnies happen if the ground goes for a loop (pun not intended) . The most common cause is using a 2 pin din plug because your POS adapter ignores the ground pin on it. sometimes your pc case will even give you a shock if this happens.

Is your mains supply decent?

Yes, like I said, better to test you system outside of the box and with different components. Let Asus do it for you then. The PSU theory sounds like a good one. And unless there is actually something wrong with the PSU, it is difficult to really assign blame, not even then actually. Even the best brands break or operate on a sub-par level from time to time. If it is your PSU, it would have been difficult to test for it probably, since it might be working fine otherwise. The fault is probably something very small. Good luck.
