Re: Minecraft.
so, some twerps leaked the pre-release which led to mojang simply making it available for everyone...
still really buggy, but playable... endermen are suitably creepy, the lighting has certainly improved the atmosphere, (especially in the deep), and the random villages add that something extra...
will be great once they get the NPCs in there...

Minecraft: 2.5 Year Beta Finally Goes Gold
Yes, after 2.5 years in the making and over 4 million sales, Minecraft has finally gone gold. This is the game with the charmingly blocky graphics where the player builds their cartoon world out of blocks and must hide from monsters at night. It will be officially released at the inaugural MineCon event in Las Vegas this Friday. Developer Markus "Notch" Persson head of studio Mojang announced it had gone gold on Twitter:
So, yes. Minecraft has gone gold.

Follow the link for the vid...16-year-old Makes Working Scientific Calculator in Minecraft
6:00 AM - March 25, 2012 by Kevin Parrish - source: YouTube
It's a working graphing calculator inside Minecraft. Doh.
To be honest, some of us barely have enough time to build a pyramid or towering 8-bit video game character in Minecraft much less a gigantic, functional machine that can be used here in the real world. Yet it's amazing to see these massive projects show up in video demonstrations where players build virtual machines brick by brick, especially from those who can't even legally vote.
Case in point: 16-year-old "MaxSGB" has created a working scientific/graphic calculator inside Minecraft. On a virtual scale, the functional device is enormous -- enough so that anyone in the real world would become a red blot of meat and bone staining the road if they fell from the very top. Honestly, his virtual machine looks more like a giant cargo ship ripped from a sci-fi movie than a working calculator. Yet type your problem out on the keypad, and the answer appears on a large white display mounted on the side of the monstrous brick structure. No spaceship can do that... can it?
"The screen and keypad were always meant to be the main feature of this machine," he writes on YouTube. "The main display boasts 25 digits. Square root signs are displayed and can change to accommodate any number of digits. Square root signs, add, minus, multiply and divide signs are displayed at appropriate times, and there is a full fraction display. The 7-segments for the fractions are the smallest possible, being only 3 wide, and stackable vertically and horizontally."
The video itself explains that its overall size is more than 5 million cubic meters -- just over 250 x 250 x 100 blocks. It provides 14 functions, BCD input, 2 BCD-to-binary decoders, 3 binary-to-BCD decoders, and 6 rapid BCD adders and subtractors. It also contains floor after floor of live decoders for quick conversions, a 20 bit (output) multiplier, 10 bit divider, a memory bank and additional circuitry for the graphing function.

Few steam friends sponsered me a "trial" version. I completely get how the game can be fun but after 30min it was like Sims all over again.

Minecraft.
Time for a small necro.
Anyone still spending time on this game?
I'm considering setting up a local server on my NAS (because I can). Might be lots of fun, but i wish the pocket version and desktop version played with each other.

Re: Minecraft.
1.3 Pre-release is up
- The game now runs an internal server in single-player mode
The single-player server can be shared on LAN, with LAN server detection
Made it possible to use client-side commands by enabling cheats (this is defaulted as disabled for old worlds)
Added an optional “bonus chest” to get started quicker
It’s now possible to trade with villagers. Added emeralds as a currency
You gain enchantment orbs from other tasks than just destroying monsters. Max enchantment level has been decreased to 30
Servers can automatically suggest and distribute texture packs
Added new world map elements (does not need a new map, but they’ll only appear in new areas)
Added cocoa beans
Added an Ender chest
Added tripwire
Stairs and levers can be placed up-side-down
Wooden logs can be placed sideways

Re: Minecraft.
What is the fascination with this? My youngest son wants to play so I am investigating. I would personally build with lego but am open to why this is so fascinating....

Re: Minecraft.
pretty much lego on speed... with zombies, farming,pets,circuitry,traps,mining,architecture,chemistry...Tribble wrote:What is the fascination with this?
and it all starts with punching a tree...
all this at a fraction of the cost of a starter set of lego...
and the worlds are massive.. and you can share them with your friends...
the nieces/nephews love the different texture packs, (the nieces play with the princess pony abominations mostly)...

Re: Minecraft.
PC offers far more versatility and a huge library of texture packs and mods, (including some stunning HD variants). xbox offers "simplified" gameplay, (crafting, etc. would be torture otherwise) and possibly simplified multi-player... but not by a large margin...

Heya Tribs
Multiplayer is far superior on the PC yes.
As far as servers are concerned, try the KwikSoft SandBox one: 41.185.60.69. Great community, cool plugins, survival, creative, admin hosted events, really cool towns and cities. Give it a look
Shout if you need any help

I don't. My little boy wants to. I said I would check it out and see if it is ok. Seems to be. I loved lego and this seems to be a really big lego set with "xtras"
