Re: Windows 7 SP1 RC x64
In terminal type "sudo apt-get update"... oh no wait... that won't work :/
Have you tried rebooting? Re-installing Windows? Upgrading to the Ultimate Edition?
All jokes aside... I am not sure why it would do this... my only interactions with Windows 7 is on my wife's laptop and it is up-to-date and even she hasn't managed to kill it (yet)...
PS - I don't get the RC part in your title?

Why are you trying to use the SP1 RC ?
MS did release the SP1 update via Windows update last week...?

Hmmm... I knew that typically RC stands for Release Candidate, but as Monty has pointed out the official release is out and I just wanted to make sure...

Re: Windows 7 SP1 RC x64
You can download the full SP1 from the Microsoft site..
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/d ... 9b77cdfdda
You will need the windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe option - a crispy 903 megs or so.
It will ask you first to download a verification tool and then gives you an authorisation code - takes about 30 seconds or so. After that it will allow you to download the full SP1.
We did it at work and installed it on some of our Win 7 64bit machines because the update wasn't working through Windows Update. Had no problems with the full install so maybe give it a bash..?

Re: Windows 7 SP1 RC x64
Ask yourself if you really need SP1 right now... is it fixing something that is broken?
I'm going to wait about a month or so before I apply it on my PC - just so that bugs and quirks like these are either sorted out or the fixes are well documented by the time I apply the SP.
That being said, if you are hell bent on installing this SP now, maybe you should try to reactivate your copy of Windows? Might resolve that error...

Re: Windows 7 SP1 RC x64
Thing is... if your copy of Windows was up to date with all of the updates available until just before SP 1 came out you already have the majority of the updates... if you didn't then you already put yourself at risk by having potential security holes in your OS... So it may be that you already have some nasties on your system...

Re: Windows 7 SP1 RC x64
Just applying every MS hotfix and security patch ever released is absolutely no guarantee that your computer is safe.
The only time in recent years that an SP, hotfix, or update was absolutely necessary to protect your PC was XP SP2 when Blaster and Sasser ran rampant.
You can have vanilla Windows 7 and with a decent AV, anti-spyware and some rudimentary common sense, you will be as safe as anyone else out there, service pack or otherwise.
In fact a lot safer than people from the school of herp all your update are belong to me I'm invincible derp

Re: Windows 7 SP1 RC x64
... I definitely don't mean that updates alone is going to make you safe...

I wasn't speaking specifically about your post, just addressing that general mindset some people have about updates and fixes
