i7 upgrade
i7 upgrade
Looking to upgrade to i7, seeing that prices has come down a bit. Can anybody point me in the right direction with choosing between 1366 & 1156. It seems as though 1156 is the way to go although i'll forfeit a bit of performance. What is the future of 1156 compared to 1155 coming out soon?
Your ideas?

Re: i7 upgrade
OH! I forgot to ask. Please excuse my terms and termanonogy - I know not what to cal so bare with me. From what I read the 1156 CPU's are locked at 1333, therefore buying faster ram kinda defeats the object and could be considered a waist of money. Any way of unlocking to ultilise faster memory?

Re: i7 upgrade
Hey buddy - welcome to the forums
regarding your upgrade - why dont you go 1155? the mobo's & cpu's are out already on online retailers & since its a brand new socket, it'll last longer that 1366.last i heard 1366 is getting chopped end of the year...theres already LGA2011 mobo's floating the web.
1156 is dead now & no point going for unless you already have it cuz its still got power, but 1155 is the way forward.
oh & regarding your ram - you right, you'll have to overclock to reach the rated speed above 1333Mhz...some boards allow to set it in the rated speed of the ram without overclocking the cpu but IMO the all core i series have amazing potential for overclocking so you better do it lol
hope this helps man.

Re: i7 upgrade
I5 2500 or 2500K will be ideal for you,it depends if you plan on overclocking your cpu? Will it be a gaming rig or multimedia etc.
I've jus bought myself an i7 2600K and the price of sandybridge really isn't that bad. Get yourself a lga 1155 cpu and mobo, please
Don't even consider 1st generation cpu, really isn't worth it... And 1600mhz RAM is sufficient,I don't see any point in spending extra money on higher frequency ram

Re: i7 upgrade
From now on 1155 all the way. If you already have an i7 no need to upgrade but better to get the new tech. As for ram as far as I know the multipliers are no longer an issue. But at 1333 it is more than enough. That said budget ram will cost you R700-800 for 8GB.
Re: i7 upgrade
Thanks a mill for the speedy response.
This will be a gaming rig and I would prefer to get something that'll last at least 2 years before considering to upgrade. I am prepared to fork out quite a bit. Any advise as to which online retailer I can try?
As a matter of interest - What is the speed difference between 1156 & 1155, the latter being the new generation.
I am currently considerring the following:
i7 CPU (+- 3.0GHz. Was thinking of 1156 870 or 875)
Mobo: Asus P7P55 d-e deluxe or sabertooth?
Memory: Seems Corsair will do, being what I consider value for money
Grapics: Nvidia -Was thinking 450 - 480GTX range.

Re: i7 upgrade
1155 will last 2 years min..i terms of retailers, titan ice rocks IMO but landmark computers seems to be the ppls choice here...
the 1155 cpu's are faster than the current 1156 cpus & even faster than the 1366 cpu's in most cases,so bang for your buck sandy bridge is king at this point.
cpu - i7 2600k
mobo - pretty much any gigabyte or asus board
ram - corsair FTW.
graphics - wait for the GTX560 or grab a GTX460 (value) / GTX570 (performance)
the GTX560's are gonna be the next mid range kings IMO.

I'm using a GTX260 for the last 2 years and it is still monster good. I can still run the latest games at 1920x1080 res on full settings with an okay fps. the GTX x60 range will always deliver.

Re: i7 upgrade
A lot of the new motherboards and CPUs are updated and matured revisions which are more effecient per watt and still faster.Vector1 wrote:Thanks a mill for the speedy response.

You would be a fool to but an old system unless you got it really cheap (Bang for buck and all that) which is what I want to do.

Re: i7 upgrade
Thanks again for great help.
One question!!! What MOBO would you guys recomend for the 1155 CPU. Seems as though you guys have convinced me go for the newer generation CPu's.
Thanks again.

Re: i7 upgrade
well, with a mobo - i'd always recommend Asus...but EVGA, gigabyte & even Msi are top notch...
i guess it depends on what you can afford...how much can you fork out?

How much is "quite a bit"? We can spec you a PC that will cost over R100 000 that will last you more that three years.Vector1 wrote:I am prepared to fork out quite a bit
Also, how big is your monitor and what resolution will it be running? Almost any setup will be able to last three years on a 14" CRT running at 800x600 resolution.

Re: i7 upgrade
Asus P8P67 Pro is quite popular for lga 1155. There's many versions of the p8p67 so you can choose which ever suite your budget. I bought myself the deluxe version at R2775. And it has all the features you would ever need, unless your an ln2 overclocker!

Re: i7 upgrade
This is what I would like to get, but before my final decision - What is your opinion.
CPU: LGA1155 2600K 3.4GHz
Mobo: Asus P8P67 deluxe
Memory: Corsair dominator 1666
Graphics: Asus 460 1gig TOP
PSU: Coolermaster 750watt
This all for +- R10,500.00
What u think? I can spare a bit more, what would you guys change to make it better?

Re: i7 upgrade
I'd change the 460GTX to a 6870 if you get one for a lower price. You didnt say how much memory your going for? Remember to use windows 7 64-bit.

Re: i7 upgrade
+2 on 6870 haha, its a good card,I'd prefer to have more overclocking headroom but its still a good card. Vector IMO
I would swap the corsair ram for G Skill Ripjaws. I have the same cpu and mobo and I'm getting myself blue ripjaws, they will do just fine. And they were designed for Sandy Bridge (but I think its a marketing gimmick anyway)
