Need help on PC build

Post by cYcLIc »

Sup. Im so out of touch with computer hardware cos of varsity and work and a lot of other things, but now I want to build a casual gaming rig. I need mobo, cpu and ram. Budget is R4000. Looking at Prophecy mostly cos of convenience, but any place will do. What do I need to look out for? Already have a 9800GT sitting somewhere.

This is what Ive got so far. Dont even know if it'll work together.

-Asus M4A785TD-M Evo AM3 DDR3 PCI-E 2.0 : R1207.33
-AMD socket AM3 Phenom2 x4, Quad-core 955 (3.2Ghz) Black edition : R1768.00
-Kingston Hyper-X KHX1333C7D3/2G 2GB DDR3-1333 CL7 : R760.27

Total: R3735.60

Thanks guys :salute:

The mobo, CPU, and graphics card look ok to me, but it is highly recommended to get the extra 2GB RAM to make the total 4GB.

I agree with Tel. You can drop the cpu to a cheaper Phenom II x4 if you can't push past R4000.

Ayt cool. Is it worth it sticking to DDR3 as opposed to DDR2?

From what I saw DDR3 is currently cheaper than DDR2! (So stick with it!)

Yup, all looks good, just add another 2GB RAM and you'll be good to go...

Also, if you're not planning on overclocking you could get a 965 Black Series for R200 more, but if you do overclock then the 955 is sweet as...

I'd consider the 965 as per ryanrich, unless you plan to overclock the 955 anyway. I'm not a fan of Hyper-X RAM personally. Besides, why spend that money on 1333 when you can get better (imho) and faster RAM for less?

Thanks for the advice guys.

From RebelTech, I can get the following:

-ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO - AMD 785G Chipset : R1,149.46
-AMD socket AM3 Phenom2 x4, Quad-core 955 (3.2Ghz) Black edition : R1,624.09
-Corsair TW3X4G1333C9 , XMS 3 , with heatsink , 2 x 2Gb/2048mb kit : 1,207.19

Total: R3,980.74

And here I was thinking Prophecy had good pricing.

If the cpu is too slow, Ill overclock it.

I would personally rather get 1 x 2048MB right now, then another later when you have some spare cash. That'll leave two slots open just in case you ever want more RAM later. Personal opinion. Take it, leave it ...

Oh, lulz, I did indeed. I was comparing the two lists ... guess I was looking too hard at the HyperX and not reading the XMS stuff properly.

Dude, why not go for the NVidia chipset board. That way you can get another 9800GT for great Sli performance later on when you have a bit of extra cash lying around. The Asus M4N75TD is R1220 at Prophecy. Also, you get free shipping from Prophecy if you buy for more than R1500...

nah I get what you are saying but I would never buy an Nvidia chipset after I have owned 2. 9800GT in Sli is not the best plan but maybe 250GTS 1gig would be.

I would buy the ATi 5850 anyday.

As an Ati fanboy that was difficult to type. Thanks for setting me straight.

Just as an added option: You could go for the new 890GX chipset. I just bought myself a Biostar TA890GXE for under R1000. You get Sata 3 support.
