I don't think you'll be able to do any better than a 9800GT from PCInt for R1024. Not a bad card.

Save R500 more and get the Ati 5750 from pcint, it's an awesome card for the cash.

Cool, wish I had better though. Next year hopefully. Hman gives sound advice. If you can save another R500, you should really go for a 5750. On the other hand, if you are not planning to go to Windows 7 any time soon, you might as well get a 4850, a GTS250 or a 4870 for a little more than R1000. They are good cards. I bought mine from Prophecy for R1365 and I am playing Crysis Warhead on Enthusiast. 8) Although, the 5750 is close to a 4870 performance wise, so it would at least be able to do the same and I guess would then still be the best choice, even if you don't go to Window 7. Just get yourself another 1Gig stick of ram as well, it makes a big difference (don't worry too much about losing Dual channel. According to a review by tomshardware, you will probably gain more in games with the extra memory than you'd lose by going with single channel).

I rate you could get twin 8800GT setup for about R1000 now.
Soon Google will know everything...including how to divide by zero :(

Plus the 5750 really overclocks well, better than the 4850 which it is replacing. I got mine this month and immediately set the clocks to 870 on the GPU and 1325 on the memory. At those speeds it's roughly equal to a 4870 except on memory bandwith terms which isn't an issue at standard 22" lcd resolutions, plus it's got dx11 support etc. I'm busy trying to get cash together to buy a better cooler so I can push it further.

My 2c :P

ATI 4850 512 MB.

I picked one up from prophecy for just over a grand, with postage.

Brilliant card, outperforms 9800GT, and is newer tech.

Endorsed by me :)

I almost bought the 4850 from them but when phoned I was told they were out of stock and would only "possibly" get stock in January. Thus I bit the bullet and got the 5750, call it divine interference or whatever.

I am strongly considering selling my card for a R1000 or so and getting a 5770, but only next year when I upgrade my system. It looks like there is quite a drop in performance in DX11 according to DIRT 2 reviews and a lot of games will automatically load DX11 if you have the hardware, but I think most games could be tweaked in the config files to get by this if some games take too much of a hit. Also, the suppliers are opening on the 4th, so hopefully computer stores will start to get new stock pretty soon.
