Telkom ADSL vs Carrier Pigeon
Some of you have heard this already, for those who haven't...
"The Unlimited" is a company with their head office in Hillcrest (just up the road from me) and a call center in Howick. Every day, they have to transfer around 4GB of call center logs to the head office, via a Telkom ADSL line. These guys weren't happy about the length of time that it took to transfer that data (I believe they have a 1Mbps line), and so decided to have a speed test: Telkom ADSL vs a carrier pigeon with a data card strapped to it.
Anyway, the race took place this morning, and... the pigeon won.

Re: Telkom ADSL vs Carrier Pigeon
hahahaha - i can well believe this - telkom is basically typical of all south african services - pathetically useless at best and thats still being kind to them - lets not even start with eskom
anyone remember the time it was proved that you could download 100 gigs cheaper and faster by flying to hong kong - downloading it there and returning ...... than to do it with telkoms lines

DeathStrike, thanks. Interesting bit of history there.
Story was apparently also carried by the SABC and it made Reuters.

Can somenone please explain to me how Seacom will improve a local ADSL data transfer in Howick?Telkom could not immediately be reached for comment.
Internet speed is expected to improve once a new 17,000 km underwater fiber optic cable linking southern and East Africa to other networks becomes operational before South Africa hosts the soccer World Cup next year.
Local service providers are currently negotiating deals for more bandwidth.

Re: Telkom ADSL vs Carrier Pigeon
I heard that it was no contest - the pigeon was destined to win.
Re: Telkom ADSL vs Carrier Pigeon
and Telkom released a statement (Yes, they were as dumb as to get involved) stating that the bad ADSL service was NOT their fault.
The story was on News24 last night, and should still be hanging around there somewhere.

Re: Telkom ADSL vs Carrier Pigeon
Thread revival time, because now the UK is copying us.
SourceRural internet access in the United Kingdom, like many other countries around the world, is slow. So slow in fact that Trefor Davies, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at business ISP Timico, has decided to pit a typical rural broadband connection against homing pigeons (with attached memory cards) to see which can get 200MB of HD video data across an 84 mile trip the fastest. Meanwhile a farmer will attempt to upload the same video file to YouTube before the pigeons can complete their journey. The comical stunt is designed to raise awareness of the often woeful broadband speed experienced by many people who live in remote and rural parts of their country. However Davies does admit that 'there isn't a benchmark for pigeon data speeds,' yet.
