Intel E2160 + Asus P5K Deluxe Question

Post by Fireball »

Hey guys!

I've dabbled with overclocking in the past, so I'm pretty comfortable poking around the BIOS, but I have never had the need to change voltages or memory speeds.

I have the following setup :

Intel Core2Duo E2160 @ 1.80Ghz
Asus P5K Deluxe Mobo
2 Gig DDR2 800mhz Kingston ValueRAM
250 Gig HDD
Sparkle Nvidia 8500GT (512 MB DDR2)
450 Watt PSU
Stock cooling that came with the cpu

Now for the real question. I hear everyone talking about how easy it is to push the E2160 up to 3 Ghz and beyond without the need to adjust voltages or cooling. However, I can't seem to push mine beyond 2.48 Ghz. I'm no expert, but I think my setup should give me some decent headroom, so why won't my CPU go any further?

I usually just increase the FSB clockspeed without changing the multiplier (x9). Granted, I tend to be a bit too impatient to increase it in 10mhz increments, so I just crank it up from 200mhz to 250mhz. It gets as far as the POST, then resets.
What am I doing wrong? Do I need more cooling, to adjust voltages or what? I'm stumped.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks a bunch!

Voltage seems most likely. Speak to the P5K owners in the forum. I'm thinking of a specific one right now and I'm sure he will respond.

CPu should be late 1.2 to early 1.3volts. That should be fine for 3ghz but north bridge *might* need a little voltage bump at that point.

P5K overclocks very well but I think you might have got a better graphics card instead of a bril mobo but hey, here you are.
Soon Google will know everything...including how to divide by zero :(

Thanks FrozenFireSide. Right then, if there are any guys out there who own a P5K Mobo, please donate some input. I'm definately a rookie, but I'm more than willing to learn (especially if it means a few more FPS on Call of Duty 5  )

By the way, FrozenFireSide, which P5K Owner where you thinking about in your above post? Maybe I can drop him a pm or something? Much Appreciated!

I have a E2180 2Ghz got it to 3.1 Ghz on standard air cooling
Overclocking sometimes cause problems like the bosd, crashing apps
If you have a spare R760 lying around I would say go for a E5200 2.5 Ghz

Hey Prophet. I actually managed to get my E2160 from 1.8GHz to 3GHz in the end. Been running it at 3GHz the whole winter . But now that summer's nearly here again, I'm getting reacquainted with my old friend, BSOD. Darn overheating! I think I'd rather invest that spare R760 into a watercooling rig.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

Thanks for the input man!

Fireball, out!

:? You won't find a decent WCing rig for that. rather get an thermalright ultra 120 extreme
