I know the Ps3 is not made to be a PC.
But if you are not into PC games and you need to free some space, and you are happy to work with Ubuntu as a desktop PC for the odd PC task, the PS3 does it well.
At first i thought its going to be waste of time and its going to be slow.
But Ubunto runs very well on it and its not slow at all.
I followed a couple of guides from the Ubuntu forums and i still had problems.
This wont mess with the XMB system and you cant break your Ps3.
You also need a USB keyboard and USB mouse.
This is what you need
The install disk
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/release ... pc+ps3.iso
Burn to CD using infra recorder or what ever imageburner you like
The above install disk has the kboot boot loader but it doesnt work on newly updated Ps3's
so you must download a newer kboot.
over here http://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/B ... 6270.shtml
or rather search kboot on google and make sure you have the latest.
Once you downloaded kboot (File is called Otheros.bld)
Use a Memorystick and on the memorystick create a folder called PS3 then in that folder create a OTHEROS folder.
Then copy the Otheros.bld file into it.
You will then have format the PS3 i made it 10GB to the other OS and the rest available to the PS3.
Backup your saves before you do.
Once done under system setting on the PS3 find install other OS.
Make sure you dont have the Ubuntu CD in the PS3 and you have the memorystick in the USB slot.
When you install the other OS the PS3 uses the CD as primary and will install the old kboot which doesnt work.
Select to install it and it will install the kboot loader and you then have change the setings to have the default OS set as
other os. It will automatically reboot.
But switch it off completly then on again and make sure the memory stick is not in and you now have the CD in.
It will automatically boot the CD using the installed kboot loader. then just follow the install instructions it takes a while, once its installed and it wants to reboot make sure you remove the ubuntu disk again.
And its installed.

Re: Ubuntu on your PS3
It wouldnt run slow obviously.Linux runs on p1's!the ps3's a powerfull machine. .Im not surprised that it runs well.
Re: Ubuntu on your PS3
Actually, just to clear things up, it runs like a piece of *****.
I have been using it as a torrent downloading machine, controlling my torrents from work using ktorrent's web interface.
Unless you've upgraded from a PII 233Mhz with 16MB RAM, running Vista, I don't know how anyone can say Ubuntu on the PS3 "runs well".

It can't even play a video smoothly. Hardly usable.
Re: Ubuntu on your PS3
you are just full of *** LOL Just kidding.
EDIT:
By the way, where did you get codecs to play video, cus the codecs that comes with is not for a PowerPC CPU's only for intel/amd based CPU's ?
