Ubuntu 8.04 Installation Error

Post by StarPhoenix »

I have tried to install Ubuntu 8.04 on my freshly upgraded machine, but have been presented with the following message:
Ubuntu wrote:Buffer I/O error on device fd0 logical block 0
How does one get around this?

*UPDATE*

Problem solved by disabling fdd in BIOS.

Next problem:

Booting from the Ubuntu 8.04 CD takes me straight to Busybox 1.1.3 and leaves me there with a "initramfs" prompt.

What do I do now?

No, I am using the CD sent to me by Canonical. [x86_64 addition for my 4Gb of RAM]

Which install option have you selected? Install within windows or on a new partition?

Linux most probably can't find your boot disc. (It's n00b like that sometimes. )

1) This is probably because Im exhausted, but are you running the x64 or x86 of Ubuntu?
2) Double check partitions. Once booted into the live CD (ie busybox) run and check the linux partition

I am running the X86_64 edition.

I cannot get to the point where I do any partitioning as ubuntu takes me straight to the Busybox text interface and leaves me staring at the prompt I mentioned earlier.

Try running the cd from inside windows, Wubi should start up with a menu.

Also, see if you can VM the CD. If it gives the same error, the CD isnt right
Noted though you can do the whole install through Busybox hey  I've discovered CLI based installers, they friggin awesome

StarPhoenix, Its normally only really done with the alternate CD. You'll have to install GUI, packages etc etc all seperately etc
I would suggest downloading 8.10 and seeing if that works. Have you tried running the VM?
