New motherboard install - help
Hey
I just installed an Asus P5NE-Sli motherboard. Now I didn't reinstall windows just repaired it and it and for whatever it now wants me to put in the confirmation ID to activate Windows. This is where the problem comes in. I can't use the internet to activate as the ethernet ports aren't working (probably driver's required and I don't have the support CD as its second hand) and so I try the telephone method which tell me there is an error with the product id I give them... Now my question is either how do I install drivers so I can connect to the net or how do I activate windows. I can't even get into my user name and then install the driver's because it just gives me, you have the activate windows error
Thanks

Re: New motherboard install - help
Why not just backup your data and reinstall from scratch? Probably the best bet, especially when putting in a new mobo.

Unfortunately too late for that now as I already did which is very stupid in retrospect.
Isn't their anyway I can get into it so I can update the drivers because after that I am sure I could activate it over the net

Re: New motherboard install - help
All you need to do is call them up, type in the code and get it wrong, get put through to a operator and tell them you changed your motherboard.
This is a generally accepted method and completely legal.

Tried that and got it wrong (several times) and they don't put me through to an operator... Its just an automated message

7 times? have you tried just bashing random numbers in the phone when asked for the code? they still ask for the code manually so you get it done as well. Try just entering 2s or 3s or something

Re: New motherboard install - help
Ok I will give it a shot and will tell you guys what happens
Re: New motherboard install - help
Ok got through to support and explained the situation and after about 40 minutes of going through this and that she eventually tells me there is nothing they can do because they can find the product key so they don't know whats wrong, and she a lodged the complaint with someone and if they can fix it they will call me back. At least I managed to get to my files through safe mode and back them up in case I need to re-install
Re: New motherboard install - help
All i can suggest is press F8 while booting up, brings up a advanced boot menu, then select safe mode and u can install drivers etc through it

Re: New motherboard install - help
Daft question, but why didn't you hibernate your PC and then put in the new/other motherboard?
Reason for asking is that I have order a new motherboard and do not want to reinstall and reactivate (ps legal copies - woohoo!)

Re: New motherboard install - help
....
Dude it's the same thing. It will still give issues-probably even worse then booting up from scratch.
Reinstall if you change too much-it just makes life easier and the system more stable.

Re: New motherboard install - help
Dang, I thought so...
Ag, reinstalling will be quicker in the long run compared to having to load drivers, suffer crashes etc. etc.
Thanks for the advice.

Re: New motherboard install - help
My mate did a repair and his scores and performance was shocking.
I out did his E8500 and I had a E6300.
The problem is the HAL-hardware access layer. This cannot be repaired and needs to be installed for dual core compatibility.
he reinstalled and hey presto, kicked my bottom in results.
