Re: ATI... erm, AMD vs nVidia!
Nothing I'm just full of crap when it comes to advancement in technology
Truth is when the Radeon 7950 and 7970 came out they were battling the gtx580. The 7950 got the same results with a little less power and the 7970 got a good deal more with the same power draw. Then came the gtx680 giving the performance of the 7970 and drawing even less power.
To me it was that signification of "we can do much more with much less than previously" kinda thing. Its the same with me buying any game on steam. I bought Just Cause 2 for $7,50. So now every game I buy I compare in the value factor and I haven't found one that was better so far.

Re: ATI... erm, AMD vs nVidia!
I'm still surprised at how good the HD7970 looks in comparison. Those who bought it over a year ago have had GTX770-class performance for ages. The GHz Edition just sealed that value in even more. No wonder why they were so comfortable not bringing a product refresh sooner - they didn't need it.
Of course, once you overclock the memory, its a different story entirely.

Re: ATI... erm, AMD vs nVidia!
Here by us you can pick up a pair of 7970s for 10k and that's pretty damn good for the performance. The only issues I have with using an AMD-based solution is the micro-stutter which AMD suffers from greatly compared to nVidia. The second is the inability to used a dedicated nVidia-based PhysX processor with non-modded drivers, although to be fair, this one is entirely nVidia's fault. The bastards.
Also, AMD is making an effort to improve the micro-stutter on their cards and it definitely shows in their latest drivers.

Re: ATI... erm, AMD vs nVidia!
Surely a 7970ghz should be able to hold its own for a bit more and then, if need be, you could crossfire.
And by then drivers would have improved more.

Re: ATI... erm, AMD vs nVidia!
My GTX680 holds its own nicely but what I want is more speed and less power consumption. Clearly we arent ready for that type of advancement yet.
Re: ATI... erm, AMD vs nVidia!
Die shrink is happening next year. We're on a 2 year cycle now afaik. That's when you'll get what you want.

We're getting their slowly. It definitely isn't going to happen overnight!

Process nodes were being upgraded yearly. Now it happens every two years. StarBound has noticed something is up, you have not

But I want it to happen over night. I know 4K will only be standardized in 2020 but I want it now! The faster it goes the faster it gets from enthusiast to mainstream to budget.Mystical_Titan wrote:We're getting their slowly. It definitely isn't going to happen overnight!
That said the radeon 79xx series was already peaking my interest and when the gtx680 got released it blew my mind about what could be done.

And I want a 100k PC, a 600k SUV and a 3 million dollar house. But wanting is pretty much where it's going to say for now.StarBound wrote:But I want it to happen over night. Re: ATI... erm, AMD vs nVidia!
100k PC, can do that now. 600k SUV, can do it now but lack the money. 3 mil house, doable now but not for me.
But then geforce gtx 880 using 100W and 4x the performance of the titan... not doable at all

Re: ATI... erm, AMD vs nVidia!
Last night AMD announced the R9 290X as its flagship model, sporting 4gb ram and avoiding every and all questions reguarding price, speed, comparisons with nvidias flagship model, Titan.
Apart from starting an hour late the presentation was painful to watch. The main focus went around radeon taking over the sound processing and how important sound is to games (if you haven't figured this out since the release of doom 3 then your already lost). Other things of note was the skyrim/borderlands hybrid Lich... something (I forgot the name ok) and Star Citizan. Going forward the focus is on 4k gaming (FINALLY!!!)

Not bad!
I didn't really notice the difference in BF3 with medium/high/ultra settings, is BF4 the same?

Re: ATI... erm, AMD vs nVidia!
Oooh, I'll play during lunchtime and check it out
I think if your card is running 60fps you aren't going to notice the difference between it and a Titan on a regular display. Less noise, maybe! Enjoy.

Re: ATI... erm, AMD vs nVidia!
My choice has been made. Thanks to the PS4 delay a MSI GTX 780 Lightning will be finding its way into my PC in a few weeks.

So... Radeon R9 280X...

Just note its not the flagship R9 290X. But GTX780 and Titan is still giving these cards a beating. Will 290X save the day?

Another one.

Nah, looks like AMD is getting destroyed right out of the gate this time. Unless the R9 290X is amazing.

Re: ATI... erm, AMD vs nVidia!
How do you figure? The GTX 780 goes for $600+ and the R9 280 will go for $300. When you take that into consideration the AMD item is a much better deal.StarBound wrote:Nah, looks like AMD is getting destroyed right out of the gate this time. Unless the R9 290X is amazing.
