Cleaning your PC lesson 1. (CPU)
Cleaning your PC lesson 1. (CPU)
This will be the first in a series of tutorials in cleaning your pc.
In todays lesson, we will clean our cpu's and heatsinks.
Checklist:
1. Power cable plugged out.
2. Lux extra-soft handwash.
3. Drying towel.
Firstly, we will remove the heatsink from the cpu, and put it in the water.
(Remember to delute some soap into the water. Use boiling-hot water for best results.)
Now carefully lift the cpu out of its socket. (Be carefull, cpu's are very fragile.)
Now let the cpu soak in the hot water for 10 minutes, giving the soap time to work its way through the millions of transistors.
Carefully dry the cpu, taking care not to bend the pins. Also dry the heatsink.
Now reassemble and plug the power cable back in.
On newer models, the heatsink also comes with a fan. Dont worry, a fan is a magnet to dust, so a good wash will do it good.
(I can not be held responsible if you mess up you computer )

I would but I don't own a P4 and removing my laptop's Pentium M is too much hassle. If I had my desktop here I'd do it to my athlon XP, I've done it to several of those.Y0da wrote:Hehe. I dare you to show us pics of you doing that to your P4 processor.
Though the most recent one I've done is this cyrix 233 I found lying in someone's backyard weeds. Been trying to get the system to boot again for the hell of it.

Just when I got the hang of life they changed the rules.
Pff, it's fine as long as you dry everything after you're done. I've washed all sorts of solid state PC parts. Just don't try it with a hard drive, water will get in the vent hole and it'll never work right.
And yes if you get a POST screen it's a pretty good bet the CPU works. Check your temps though.

I prefer to keep my Athlon 64 as dry as possible
The only liquid I ever use on it is pure alcohol, when I need to clean thermal paste off it.

I remeber a while ago, in the days of the Pentium III. I was bored, so I took of the heatsink of the CPU while in Quake III Arena, and about 10 seconds later the system hung... So I removed the extreamly hot cpu, and threw it in the swimming pool to cool it down, I then took it to the deep freeze and froze it for a day, after that, I wiped the ICE off and put it back in the system, and overclocked it from 600 to 800, still without a heatsink. It actually booted into windows, since it was very cold at boot time. So 37 seconds later the system hung again, and I repeated the process on last time. All-in-all, the CPU actually survived!!! I was very impressed! Allthough, I'll never try it with my AMD, cuz I removed the heatsink of an Athlon 1200Mhz and it burned out

I once accidently didn't attach the heatsink properly when testing a client's socket A board with a Duron 1.2... the chip burned itself out in about 6 seconds! I was wondering what the funny burning smell was, until I noticed the HSF clip hadn't caught the socket edge properly!Allthough, I'll never try it with my AMD, cuz I removed the heatsink of an Athlon 1200Mhz and it burned out
Thankfully the board was just fine...

Everyone has a photographic memory. Some don't have film.
That's lucky! I think the current chips have got fairly good built-in heat protection... PC usually just shuts down if it hits a critical temperature.
