First time modding...

Post by Off-The-Chart »

Here is my first attempt at a blowhole:

Used a dremel with reinforced cutting discs and then rounded it, or at least tried to, with a sanding disc... (This goes on until I get my holesaws)

Here is an old speaker I test sprayed with Gun Metal Gray:

Comments and further ideas welcome and needed....

Aaah the wonders of losing you modding virginity.

Nice job on the hole. It tough cutting hole with a dremmel. You did a fine job one that. Next time put a lekker thick layers of masking tape on the perspex to prevent any nasties from happening. Perspex is a real cow to work with. Once you fit the fan and grill you will not even see the whole was cut by hand.

The gunmetal looks cool. You gonna do you whole case that way?

Here is a quick perspex dos and donts thingy I wrote a while back:

There are lots of people out there that are dying to mod a case by using Perspex. The problem is that the stuff is expensive and hard to work with if you have not worked with it before.

Here goes.

The most important thing to remember is to keep the protective plastic on the sheet until you are finished modding it.

The second most important. Perspex is fragile. It scratches easy and chips just as easy.

When drilling into it, it is better to use a blunt bit that sort of melts into the perspex rather than cutting into it. Reason for this is that there is a good chance that the perspex will chip when the bit goes through.

You cant drill a hole bigger. It causes major chipping and even cracking.

Plan what you want to do first, and then do it. Nothing sucks more than screwing up a sheet of expensive perspex.

Expect to pay about R 1000 + for a full perspex case.

To join perspex without seeing any glue marks you can use a product called Claritite. I dont know where to get it but it is a chloroform based glue with the viscosity of water. Hold the two pieces together and apply it with a syringe. This stuff bonds the perspex like crazy. Takes about 1 minute for a bond and 24 hours for maximum bond.

Dont ever use superglue. It eats perspex and leaves ugly marks.

Perspex will attract static electricity and dust. Clean it carefully.

Working with perspex has a lot of rewards and can be fun to work with.

Ask if you want to know more.

"Integrity" and "integer" both contain a Latin root meaning "whole; complete." The root sense, then, is that people may be said to be acting with integrity when their beliefs, words, and actions have a sense of unity or wholeness.

As the topic states "First Time Modding..."... Modding isn't something that's cheap if you want to go big... You have to start somewhere...

Mine also work just fine but would like to get some new ones... I got so many modding ideas that I would like to test and try out but just so little money... Will keep doing little ones until my ship sails in...

Off-the-Chart: To clean old glue residue from labels, etc, there is only one thing I use......Doom Insect Killer......and I am serious!!

Spray it on the area, liberally, and use a clean cloth to wipe it off....one or two sessions is all that is usually needed.

As always, this stuff is toxic/poisonous, use it in a well ventilated area, use a respirator and thoroughly wash your hands afterwards.

Don't kill yourself...that is the most important part :)

Enjoy your modding.
