Follow my networking tutorial by clicking the link below. Although it is based on a Win98 network you should still be able to sort everything out with ease.

Creating a network with Windows XP is a breeze. Just insert your Win XP disc into your computer and select the option from the menu which sez create a home or small network.
Follow the instructions , insert the discs into the 98 comp and you´re done.

I also have problems with networking XP Pro SP1 with 98SE. I have used the home network wizard but to no avail. After I followed the steps, the 98SE machine did detect my XP machine but when I wanted to access it, I received a message that the XP machine does not form part of the network :?: On the other hand, my XP machine does not detect the 98SE machine at all. Funny thing is I can "ping" the two machines without any trouble and even play games across the network. Yet when I want to share files etc. it fails to work. And I have enabled file sharing on various of the 98SE machine's folders.

Do either or both of the machines have firewalls running? If they do then disable the firewalls and see if that helps. Otherwise I'm no expert, but I had the same problem about a week ago at work and it turned out to be the firewall.
I kill you in my dreams, I turn the other cheek during the day.

1.make sure both machines belong to the same workgroup.
2. unless yu assign addresses manually, install DHCP on one of them.

I have no firewalls running.

The machines were networked flawlessy for two years when both had Win98SE installed. But since I formatted the one and installed XP Pro SP1 I cannot get the two connected again.

I followed the same procedures I've always followed when linking Win9X machines, but this time it seems to have failed.

I have "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and Printer Sharing" installed on both machines, as well as TCP/IP (and of course IPX because I want to link Starcraft )

I've set the IP address of the XP machine manually to 10.0.2.1 and the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. The 98SE machine has the same subnet mask value and the IP address is 10.0.2.2. Both computers are also on the "WORKGROUP" workgroup.

I can "ping" each computer from the other and also LAN games like Starcraft, Counterstrike etc. No problem. I just can't share files which I really want to do.

On the XP machine "My shared documents" is shared and on the 98 machine various folders are shared as they were when the XP machine was still networked as a 98 machine.

Fact is the XP machine only detects itself under "My Network Places" while the 98 machine strangely detects both itself and the XP machine. Yet when I click on the XP machine it says that this machine is not on the network.

I followed the same procedure I've always followed with linking two Win9X machines but this time it's not working. What am I doing wrong?
