You obviously didnt look hard enough. Along with Cameron´s post there are many distrobutions(flavors) of linux... Go to http://linuxiso.org . Or if you dont feel like downloading huge files, you can order cheap distro´s (Notthe officially boxed versions) from http://cheapbytes.com . The normal shipping time to africa is around 20 days... lucky me i live on the east coast of the USA... so i get my orders in 7 days or less.

When you get any distro of linux, I invite you to connect to come to visit the Linux mIRC channels on irc.openprojects.net . The different disto´s have channels . Ie: #mandrake, #gentoo, #redhat, #freebsd etc.

Happy Linuxing....

If you have a zippy internet connection, you could try ftping to ftp.is.co.za/pub/linux or ftp.sun.ac.za and take a squizz at their hosted distributions.. ftp.is.co.za is a Gentoo linux mirror, hurrah!

Rook: if you are asking where abouts to find linux, i take it you are a bit new to the linux world then?

Let me give you some help, if you are new to the world on linux, get a distro like RedHat or Mandrake. And just remember, Linux isnt anything like windows my friend, so once you install it and look at it forget everything you know about windows

Distro´s such as Slackware & Gentoo require a bit of knowledge of linux before installing them (I wouldnt recomend gentoo, since you have to be connected to high speed network in order to install it "it does a inet install of about 800mb)

Kyle_Foxon: hehehe you make me laugh, "Linux mIRC" nah thats really funny...
mirc = irc chatting client for the windows os
irc = internet relay chat
linux mirc = no such thing
linux irc = 90% of all irc servers are hosted on linux

Rook: if you need help with a certain distro, just email my your problem ibiza_za@hotmail.com and i will help you with whatever i can

just to add to the confusion.

You don't pay for linux. You pay for support, Packaging, shiping, etc. Thats why it's a "Free" Download. (Obviously Free is a relative concept in SA, as Telcom charges you an arm and a leg if you'd want to Download 5 CD's of Linux (SuSE 9.1 is 5 CDs))

We here at work use SuSE Linux because we're Novell Partners and they have just taken over SuSE and Ximian (Ximian is a company that created Ximian Desktop for Linux)

Also, Rook.
Where do you stay? if you're close we can organise (ie. You come over with 5 CDs and we can write SuSE for you.)

Post by Rook »

hey all,

been away for some time now and during that time i have totally migrated to unix. thanks for all your help guys.

for those that want to do like yours trully, redhat 9 and suse 8 are cool and setting up a dual boot system first is always the best thing to do until you are comfortable with the other system.

Coming from a n00b point of view, as a user who wants to learn lynie for the basic use of firewalls and such like things, I have found Mandrake 10 is super enough for me to actually understand what it is that I'm doing. Yes, the GUI is very Windows, which makes it easy to slide from the one to the other. We have been playing with Knoppix that you can use in RAM doing all sorts of things on a Win pc, teaching the guys in our groups about lynie. But from all the distros that I have "played" with (SUSE... Still have your disks Mr Bean!) to slackware to redhat, I find that I understand the Mandrake the best.

Perhaps Matt can start some tuts for us. We will ask politely, and I know he will comply :)
"Integrity" and "integer" both contain a Latin root meaning "whole; complete." The root sense, then, is that people may be said to be acting with integrity when their beliefs, words, and actions have a sense of unity or wholeness.

I can only say that many people are having display problems - maybe 10 to 15% of linux newbies if not more.

It's not easy to setup and I'll never pretend it is - in fact, it's bloody crazy most the time.

You have to get used to a console program called vi for when your GUI doesn't work - you need to use a workable GUI, usually on a windows box, to search the internet to find out why it's not working.

You also need to read and read and read and read until your eyes are sore !

Most modern Linux installations will detect maybe 70% of hardware, but when they don't, it usually involves a lot of time and effort to the extent that often people will say "fsck it, I'll go back to windows"

Still, it remains a viable alternative to windows, if your willing to take the time.

Don't forget does internal win"modems": got to *hate* those! They are not even a real modem thus all the problems in Linux.
