Games in XP will not work??

Post by nuvur »

I have recently upgraded to XP on my AMD 1800, with 512DDR ram and a GeForce 2 MX 400 64MB. But when ever I run games, old or new, I get either booted out, or computer restarts. Sometimes even recive a memory dump BlueScreen... I have updated all the software, but still have the problem. Any Suggestions???

WinXP´s native Nvidia drivers do not support OpenGL. If this is the problem go to
www.nvidia.com and get new drivers.
Otherwise go to www.ntcompatible.com and
check if your game is compatible with XP.

Do you have SP1 installed?

Also, the problem maybe due to a faulty motherboard, or sh!tty RAM?

Need more details though:
What RAM (from where)

Have you considered the possibility of a virus. Most viruses tend to affect executabled. Try running a antivirus program in safe mode.
A bad sector on your HD could also cause crashes, set scandisk to run when your computer boots up.

Also, maybe your installation of XP is unrelated to your problem? Perhaps, by coincidence, your CPU fan became faulty at the same time as you intalled XP. Check that your CPU is not overheating when you play games.

I have installed the new DX9 drivers and still same problem accures.

Did a virus scan and no viruses to be found. I havent checkedthe fan yet but don´t think it could be it, because if I install an older version of window (98 or 2000) the games work fine, as soon as I upgrade back to XP the games will not work.

Thanx for the help though. If any one has any other ideas it will be a great help...

Nuvur, did you do a clean install of XP, or upgrade from 98? If you upgraded, try backup all your important data and do a complete format and reinstall.

nuvur, have you checked that your RAM is seated properly and working right? Do your games never run, or do they sometimes work? Have you tried removing and reinstalling any of the problematic games?

I have tried a clean install and tried to upgrade, same problem in both.

Sometimes the games will work but then they just crash. I have also checked the ram and its seated right, and the system says it is working properly. OnlyOneKenobi the problem is that all my games are crashing and I have tried to reinstall them as well.

Any other help will be realy gr8, and thanx for the help so far...

I am also having some problems playing games under windows XP.
At the moment Generals and SOF II are running well. But Ghost Recon and Max Payne i am having some up hill.
Check for patches for the games
Max Payne as a patch that should fix my issue with it. At the moment I am downloading two patches for Ghost Recon.
So hopefully that should fix my issues with playing me games.
I recon you should check for updates or patches for the games and take it from there.

I actually recall having a problem like yours, nuvur. My NFS5 would crash, (actually it still does) but some friend of mine were able to get it to work on their PC´s running XP by changing the virtual memory size. I can´t remember exactly what size they made it, but it has something to do with the amount of RAM you have. Does anybody know the formula for RAM to virtual memory size?

I have my doubts about this actually helping, but hey its worth a try.

Peace out brother

Well changing the value for the Virtual Mem didn´t work either. I will look into newer patches for the games though.

And in case you guys are wondering virtual memory must be aprox double your mem. But the defualt is norm about 345mb, this is normaly to small for most newer big games.

Well thanx for the help and I´m still going to try any thing to get this working...

Hey SnowMonkey, why would the number of ram chips make a diff?? ( I want to know because I upgrade soon to DDR and might wait longer to get one 512 instead of 2 256..

It doesn’t make any difference. I was going to suggest that he remove one chip and try if the problem persists then try the other.
Hmmm what mobo you gonna use if it is a dual DDR or if ye thinking of getting dual DDR then I would suggest 2 256 instead of one 512MB.

Gigabyte AMD boards do not support Dual DDR, but MSI, ASUS, EPOX do.
Your 512 MB chip will be fine!
Make sure you are buying a 333 or 400 DDR!
