Some thoughts on security

Post by Thrall »

First - no single antivirus product is really better than another at the moment - what counts is how often the company concerned release their updates as a result of new viruses being discovered after they hit the wild - and how readily the user installs those updates.

Second - because of the retroactive nature of AV software at present, there will *always* be a new virus out there which will not be recognised by your - or anyone else´s - software, no matter how up-to-date the definitions or your patches are. Live with it.

Third - security is everyone´s concern.

Fourth - by extrapolation of the above point, your own security is your own concern. Take the incidents so prevalent at LAN´s these days - trojans, viruses, unauthorised leeching, etc. Get a good AV program and keep it up-to-date. Get a good firewall and learn how it works - RTFM comes to mind. Get the patches for your software and realise that, as in point 2, there are no guarantees - which leads me into my next point...

Fifth - backup anything that you don´t want to lose, and test that the backup itself actually works before having to rely on it.

Sixth - I know the difference between a cracker and a hacker, and quite frankly don´t give a rat´s bottom. I *will* react violently at any LAN where someone tries to crack my box because my PC is my home, damnit. I don´t peer into anyone´s closet because I think it´s bloody rude, so don´t try and see what I keep in my fridge just because you´re curious and think that it harms nobody.

As Shakespeare´s Juliet said "What´s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.". In other words, you´ll be known by what you are, not what you call yourself.

*clap clap* A very nice analogy, and a very appropriate quote
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes.

Hey do you guys know where I can download a virus update for Norton AV 2003. I don´t wanna use the Live Update option, as I like to keep the update files on my PC (incase of a reinstall) I used to know the website, but forgot. It was great, all you had to do was download this .exe file, and double click it (when downloaded) and the AV definitions were updated!
