Is a amd athlon 1200 still worth it ?

hi i was just wondering ....
 i can get a amd athlon 1200 for R200 bucks
 but i still need to buy a board and memory and psu , should i go ahead and buy the rest of the parts ??? , it will save me alot of money compared to a p4 ..
 i have worked it out roughly what it will cost
 about R2435+- tell me what u guys think ???

I still hav a Athlon 1000.My mothrboard fried but while I had it it ran very well.I was quite pleased with it.Plus hey a cpu for 200 bucks doesnt come along too often! <IMG SRC="images/forum/smilies/icon_cool.gif">

That 1200 amd is probably secondhand. If you shop around you can get a new AMD Athlon XP 1700+ for just over R600. Much better performance, and you know that it has not been hurt or abused by someone else.

As was said, a chip for R200 doesn´t come along very often. I´d suggest you get a new mobo that will support upgrades for a while, and then upgrade your chip when you get the money. A 1200 is not a bad processor, it´ll kick my Celeron down the stairs.

Any AMD wil kick any Intel down the stair but a 1200 for R200 is not worth It when you can get a 1700+ for R600.
 There is so much more performance out of the 1700+.
 Put it this way buy that thunderbird and a month down the line you`ll be wishing that you bought a 1700+ cause your disappionted with the performace!

Buying a new m/board,RAM,PSU should be alot cheaper, round about R1300. I bought a AMD athlon 1.3Ghz, 128DDR266,gigabyte m/board with int. geforce and doby digital,PSU for R1402 ex VAT. <IMG SRC="images/forum/smilies/icon_wink.gif">

 I can get you a 1700+, 256MB DDR, Nforce 1 Mobo with 5.1 sound and Geforce 2mx200 for
 R1600 incl vat!

its an ok cpu but u could save up 4 a bit longer and listen to wat the rest say
 just go for sumthing more powerful
 Amds arent tooo xpencive
