adaware - record for discovered spyware ?

Post by bb_matt »

A buddy of mine that is not very computer savvy asked me to look at his laptop.

Basically, it stopped being able to dial out - "port not found"
After a bit of quizzing, I finally got some more info out of him - he'd been visiting some dodgy sites - probably pr0n, but he didn't say.

Apparently one of them installed a dialer onto his machine, but he quickly disconnected before it dialed out.

Anyway, he brought the laptop to my office.
I put Adaware onto his laptop from a CD - no way I would put the machine on my network !

I ran Adaware and started getting amazed - 46 files found, 48, 59, 94 - I'd never seen anything that bad !

Well, it took about an hour to run and the final tally was 298 !

There was at least 15 "hotbar" type trojans, some things I'd never seen before, a gazillion tracking files / cookies etc.

In fact, adaware had to reboot the machine and restart it to remove some of the components.

I downloaded the trial of mcafee for him to load, but he forgot the disk, so I guess he must have about the same amount of viruses !

I've made a decision to divert any of his email to a secure location for reading and to never allow him on any of my networks !

Its amazing how ppl actually believe that if they download something that they will be able to see some free porn. When will these people learn?

A funny story (one of many concerning dialers):
I got a call from the old guy with a bit of a high pitched voiced, he was going on about how my disc had caused his machine to dial-up to an international number. He was completely letting rip at me, I had to listen to him carry on for a while before I asked him the BIG question.

Went something like this
Cameron: "Sir, I have to ask this question because it’s important but I don’t want to offend you. Do you visit porn sites?"
Old guy: "Umm, WHAT. NO NEVER! WHY WOULD YOU THINK THAT I VISIT PORN SITES?"
Cameron: "These dialers normally are installed when you accept something to be installed on your system to view free porn"
Old guy: "WELL I NEVER VISIT PORN SITES, THIS CAME FROM YOUR DISC AND I THINK YOU NEED TO FIX IT"
Cameron: "Sorry sir but that did not come from my disc. When exactly did this start?"
Old guy: "About two weeks ago or so"
Cameron: "Well then it couldn’t have been the disc you are talking about because it wasn’t out yet. Are you sure you never accepted to install something while online to view some free stuff...maybe by mistake?"
Old guy: "Well, I was on a search engine and clicked a link (blaa blaa blaa) and this site came up. Just out of interest I checked and it did ask me to accept something."
Cameron: "So you did go to a porn site?"
Old guy: "Umm, ya. I guess so but I wasn’t there for long"

And it went on but I did help him resolve the problem...

Heh, it feels good when you can make someone realise their own stupidity, especially if they blame you for doing stuff that's their own fault.

People like that need to be p**s-klapped. I have no problem with ppl making n00b mistakes, it happens to the best of n00bs, but don't then try claim that you didn't. It's like 'Hey, your system's broken, I can't login!!!!'. Firstly, it's not _my_ system, it's _Microsoft's_ system. Then you say 'Is your Caps Lock on? *pause* *click* 'Umm... no... Oh, never mind, it's working now' *hangup*
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes.

Exactly, I mean really, haven't they heard of The Hun ?

Seriously tho Cameron, as you say, people can be really silly when it comes to trying to cover up thier mistakes.

I didn't investigate his laptop any further - I told him to clear out his email inbox and browser cache and not to be a dumb-bottom anymore.

It's a PIII laptop, but I can tell you, before I ran Adaware, it was running like a PI ! - he also had this really stupid desktop animation called Kali, which is a big-busted "wonder woman" type lycra "babe" that does all sorts of silly moves (nothing pornographic - just suggestive) - that was taking up about 20meg of RAM by itself !

Some people should not be allowed to own computers !

Think thats bad
Went to a friends house who has a 2.4Ghz cpu which was running slower than my 1Ghz PC.
His mom asked me to check it out and I told her to get Norton AV
She got this and I searched for viruses came up with 96 in cluding sasser, bulldog(or something like that) and a whole lot of others.
Worried about his PC i got a copie op AdAware and ran a search came up with 369 things.

No wonder it was so slow
