2000 Professional Lan Problems!!
PLEASE HELP! I´ve set up a LAN using 3 laptops and one desktop (all with the same OS - ie Win 2000 Prof.). 2 of the laptops and the desktop are happy with the setup but the one laptop is driving me nuts! The TCP/IP settins I´m using is correct, no problems with the cables and the hub is working fine. I´ve switched cables and ports more than you can imagine! The laptop only wants to see itself on the network - and I´ve come to a point where I can see the problematic laptop on the other pc´s but when trying to access the shared files or folders I get the same error message over and over again "network path not found". I´ve tried pinging too and it seems fine when I ping the problematic laptop from itself - but all packages are undelivered whenever I try the IP adress of the other 3 happy systems. What am I missing - coz I´m sure it must be something minor I´m missing here!! And Im ready to demolish the laptop that´s giving me stress. Please Please Please - any advice will do.

Sounds like you could be on a different workgroup from the other machines (No domain controller in your small peer to peer network) Make sure that the laptop in question is on the same workgroup as the rest... Then if this does not help double check all of your networking settings..It might even pay to remove all your network devices and start again from scratch on the troublesome machine. Also check to see if internet sharing is enabled and set this up properly if required.
Of course there could a good few other things, but these tend to be the main problem areas,
hope you get networked!

I don´t think it has anything to do with the workgroup, if it had anything to do with that then he should still be able to ping the other machines...reinstall TCP/IP, you can also try upgrading the network card drivers and installing your services packs.

This only happened to me once, but I think it´s worth mentioning.
Some friends and I were trying to set up a StarCraft network, but no matter what we tried we couldn´t get one of the computers to join up with the rest of the network. Eventually we tried swopping network cards, and to our suprise it was the network card causing all the trouble. We thought it was busted until a while later, when we had another network card that exactly the same as the one that was giving all the trouble. As it turns out, those network cards refused to communicate with any network cards with another chipset, even if the network card came from the same company.

But we were Dragons. We were supposed to be cruel, cunning, heartless, and terrible. But this much I can tell you, you ape - we never burned and tortured and ripped one another apart and called it morality.

Yep all valid points...Having just had a look at the MS knowledge base on networking problems, such problems are legion! Tricky to solve..but at the same time amazingly simple solutions in many cases...Hope you get your troubles sorted soon there Death..PLEASE tell us if you do too and what you did! I reckon the reinstallation Cameron suggests is a good bet (It worked for me before I know), and yes seems there are incompatible chipsets too (!!). See you guys later!

i would definitely try re installing tcp/ip ,often it can become corrupt , normally from a previous virus infection .

while reinstalling TCP/IP, if you had dial-up networks installed, delete and reinstall that as well. I´ve had a problem, much the same and it was the dial-up networking drivers, they had gone BAD.

[ Edited by Sky On Date
August 01, 2002 ]

Ok firstly you need to have NETBEUI installed on all the pc´s -- goto connection properties > add/install -> protocolls -> netbeui. Then make sure you have client for microsoft networks on the laptop with probs. You should not have a prob after this.
