samsung ssd did I just screw up?
Has anyone used samsung SSDs? Because I've spotted a 500GB drive for R4500. I swear by intel but samsung might just provide that space fix that I need with the 1TB drive.

Re: samsung ssd reliability
From what I have read, Samsung is making some of the best flash chips atm and if it runs on a tried and tested controller, I don't see any reason not to go for it.

+1 To what Kalster said. I wouldn't trust Samsung with mechanical drives but their SSD's are ten times better than say Corsair's... <_<

Re: samsung ssd reliability
I know intel is THE SSD brand to go with if you want reliability but samsung is getting good reviews and the pricing is competitive. I wont mind slapping a ssd into my ps4.

Re: samsung ssd did I just screw up?
So I ordered my 1TB Samsung Evo last night for just under R9k. Can you imagine a SSD with more storage than intels flagship SSD at 40% of the price? And then... it hit me. ( http://www.wootware.co.za/samsung-mz-7t ... i-ssd.html vs http://www.wootware.co.za/intel-ssdsc2b ... drive.html btw)
Samsung MZ-7TE1T0 Evo-Series 1 TB 2.5" TLC SATA III SSD
TLC!? Tri-Level Cells? The stuff that flash drives are made of? I read and reread reviews trying to comfort me but I feel like I did something very wrong here. Worst case scenario is I write 1TB a day with 1000 writes meaning it will last just under 3 years. Best case, it lasts 3000 writes which brings it up to about 9 years and if I only write 100gb a day it could last up to a theoretical 90 years. But TLC... oh man. Did I make a mistake?

Overall, the drive is good. I'm just worried about the life span. Unlike an hdd, ssd is an 10 year investment at least.

You're smoking something, mate!StarBound wrote:Overall, the drive is good. I'm just worried about the life span. Unlike an hdd, ssd is an 10 year investment at least.
If you think you will still be actively using this SSD in even 5 years you are fruitier than papsak...
Capacity increases alone means you'll be chucking it away.
If you factor in access speed increases and other technological advancements and new hardware standards etc then the lifespan of ANY drive, whether it fails or not is < 5 years
How many 7200RPM 320GB IDE HDD's are you still using? 10 years ago those were what you bought if you wanted big capacity and good performance...
IF you still have any of those around they are at best relegated to archival duty and gathering dust in a cupboard.
I have two with anime on them and IIRC its been about 2 years since I last plugged one in
No reason SSD's will be different.
I have a OCZ Vertex II 120GB SSD thats just over 2 years old now. Will it see even another 2 years of active use
Is the pope Islamic?
Stop over thinking everything you'll be fine.

I have an 80GB drive that's been with me for over 10 years. Still in regular use.

My 160gb SSD is 5 years old. Only thing that changed is that I added new drives as I needed space.

Re: samsung ssd did I just screw up?
Well mine is Intel and I swear by them as far as reliability goes. But price wise Samsung got good reviews which is why I bought it. I only started worrying when I saw the TLC in the product name afterward. I don't think I would have taken the plunge if I noticed it off the bat.

Re: samsung ssd did I just screw up?
Just like any other drive. But I am moving about 430gb of data to the drive. Going from an 480gb ssd to a 1tb. Then I can start installing all the crap that I have to uninstall because of my 480gb limit.

Really. It's ok.
I'm spreading this out over three posts so that you can calmly realize that you didn't just blow R9k.
And besides, even if that drive does fail next year you have backups. Er, you do have backups, right?
Also, are you sure you're not earning too much money?

Re: samsung ssd did I just screw up?
Last time I checked my salary does not reflect 6 digits a month or even 7 digits a year. Dont have kids or a wife. And yes I have backups but the old 480gb ssd is suppose to go to the PS4.
