Re: What's killing the forum
You are all only partly right - it was the people. We had awesome people here. They were fun, interesting, silly, brilliant, amazing.....and some annoying But those people grew up and became too old for this place. Life and priorities took over and this took a back seat. Granted some of those awesome people are still here - but they are busy and don't post like they used to. I used to love Mousey's dark and twisted wit - and the puppy - and Doo and and and (I will not list you all here) - yes you are still here - sort of. Mousey doesn't even pop into the Eng thread to say Hi and Doo only posts in tech and Afr threads these days. Captain and D33, Phoenix and GG - and a hand full of others pop in occasionally.
When I joined it was awesome - it was a place that I had to log into first thing in the morning. It is no longer that place. It would be so easy to give this place life again - but not so easy to sustain it. You need the quality of people that you used to get - but there are too many outlets and avenues to choose from. Too many distractions. Even other forums are dying. We used to have ingame sites for our alliances in Ogame - now we just Skype each other. Yes the Ogame forum is active - and we have "an interesting time" there = but it does not have the characters we have here. Though there is one Mod that reminds me so much of jee
Anyway - I am rambling.
tl;dr - it was the people that made this place great.

Anky dearest. Rather say it is water under the bridge. I won't say more on the subject - other than this tactic never works on satisfying curiosity.

Re: What's killing the forum
Dont really think this will give any answers but after much spamming and annoying of admins I too moved on, the reasons for this are:
1. The place was dead(still is), there were times where I wanted to chat with somebody but there was nobody around
2. I was becoming increasing irritated by being singled out or jumped on by the powers that be(mostly my fault but some was really unnecessary)
3. Having your profile fiddled with is only funny for so long
4. Times have changed, I have moved away from living in the internet

This is pretty much it nothing will continue forever, sure there are other factors like the mag no longer drawing people here. Remember mixit which was all the rage, you can probably count on one hand the amount of people still using it nowGDI_Lord wrote:Sometimes, in some cases, people just move on.

No DR, in all fairness I gather it got rather heated and ugly (and personal?) in the mods lounge and they'd rather not share the whole thing with us.DarkRanger wrote: Seems like the PIB has already been signed into law here...
Which is actually quite OK with me.
But I do miss Gee and RRF. And the crusty old bugger .. errr.. I mean Lancelot.

Re: What's killing the forum
PIB? doo got it right. It is something that does not need to be discussed here. If it were to be public knowledge then go and ask the most senior of us to give you a blow by blow of what went down. Guess what? That person is Nab and I can tell you right now he will give the same answer. So please drop it, you don't know what happened and since it was a private matter chances are you will never know. If however you feel it is your right to know (and I am repeating myself) ask Nab.DarkRanger wrote: Seems like the PIB has already been signed into law here...

Re: What's killing the forum
Interesting topic.
I don't think I used to post that often after joining. I was more of a reader than a poster back in the day. Every day I'd check that side bar thingy with the latest 15 posts (I think). I'm sure back then things were at their prime, with the old site.
I was also a lot younger back then, so I tended to get involved with some heated flame wars. The only one I recall had to do with fog lights being used in fog-less areas. I also had some words with Rusty - why I don't know. But those were two very isolated incidents, which I think I got over quickly.
I can think of two things that did it for me.
A few people mentioned moving on. After joining, having my unnecessary wars with people, I changed jobs. I went from doing rather menial work to something really involved. And not much has changed after all these years.
The second thing was freedom. I took my minimal posts elsewhere, because I like the idea of not being bound by so many rules. The rules may be justified, and I may not disagree with them altogether, but still - it's a preference I guess. I wasn't keen on the monitoring, editing and removing that went on - I'm not sure if it's changed, and if it hasn't, I'd still be put off.
That said, the two most memorable forum moments were on this forum:
- Killerbyte running out of petrol, myself taking pictures and posting them... everyone going ape with the funny comments.
- Killerbyte posting a pic of a woman (I think?) which was really bad quality. People going ape with some photoshopping.
I don't think everyone bails and leaves it at that though. The other forum I usually browse is rather slow at times (more so than not). Since it started slowing down, I'd occasionally visit the front end website (g3ar.co.za if I don't make any sense).
The constant flow of articles drew me back all the time. And of course, the competitions.
And because I was drawn there, I then started checking the forums again. I'm sure I can't be the only one though.
Other than that, perhaps it's the URL. Everything else PCF has leaned towards G3ar, except the physical mag and the forum URL. Which is a bit of a mixup I think.

Re: What's killing the forum
I agree with Mr_Norris, I always felt the forum was a bit of a nanny state. On the forum or wherever, I don't care much for rules, I find them far to obnoxious. One reason why I don't want to live in a first world country. Eg. one guy got a fine for about R1000 for going 105km/h in a 100 zone in the Netherlands, I also got R1000 last year for 173km/h on the highway. Way to go SA, this is how I like it.
This is the reason I don't bother with the chat threads most of the time, if someone has an interesting technical question I will gladly reply.
I also think with the dawn of the internet less people is going to buy a paper Mag, they would rather look it up on google. Because less people are going through the Mag, that gateway is also shrinking.
Just my Zim $10000

You also missed maxxis troll thread.
Actually looking over your list hamin it shows that we were quite lenient because a lot of those threads went on for quite awhile and in some cases it was actually the forum members who helped make the decision to close the threads. Nanny state forum indeed...
