X-COM UFO: Enemy Unkown
X-COM UFO: Enemy Unkown
Few games have had me as exited about a remake of a classic as this one.
What gives this remake from Firaxis a massive chance to blow you away is firstly, it's done by Firaxis. Next, the lead designer is a massive cult follower of the original, with that in mind, he have tried to stay with the original concepts as much as possible. Yes, we are talking turn based strategy.
Available for sale in October 2012, this is a game to keep an eye out for.

console/pc hybrid means sacrifices were made, regardless of the marketing blather...
still hopeful it does, indeed, entertain as much as the rest of the series...

Re: X-COM UFO: Enemy Unkown
Spiderbot made me watch the trailer this morning - he is ever so excited. I see it is a turn based game but must admit that it does look really cool. Not sure I am clever enough for such a game though - so will give it a miss.

Will be my first X-Com game, very excited!

Re: X-COM UFO: Enemy Unkown
I've played the first one and didn't understand it one bit. Played apocalypse and thought I was doing good but 5 missions in I had no money left and all my troops were dead or infected. Played interceptor and loved that but it wasn't a true xcom title.

Thanks for the link correction, I used the you tube link button in the Reply menu, it gave the syntax as [.youtube][./youtube].StarBound wrote:Important to note this isn't the XCOM fps game, it is the rts remake.

One correction, it is NOT the RTS remake, the X-Com RTS title(and FPS title for that matter) was a total flop.
This is a TBS game, sadly a dying breed.
Let me offer you an insightful opinion.
RTS games in general is at the lower and intermediate player levels generally won by the player who understand the learn-2-play priorities. Only once you get to be involved with the higher ranked players, do things start to even out. What do I mean with that? Firstly, understand the L2P priority sequence, which NEVER change, no matter what RTS game is on the table. It is a mix of skill and strategy, that is:
1. Hot keys, the ability to learn the game specific keyboard hotkeys is so intricate, it borders on learning to type with 10 fingers without looking at your hands. The person who can get the fastest resources, and then spend those resources fast, will automatically have a game-winning advantage, no matter who he is up against. In Warhammer 40K I win 70%+ of games by default in my friends group, because I amass resources lightning fast, despite the encyclopedic WH40K knowledge my buddies have. This is NOT strategy, but a skill... and anyone with time on their hands and a bit of dedication can learn it. NOT having hotkeys under control, will let you hit a lower ceiling after which you just won't be able to compete - true for 90%+ of the genre.
2. Learning your own buildings/units and their abilities, strengths and weaknesses.
3. Learning your enemy's buildings/units and their abilities, strengths and weaknesses.
4. Learning the game maps.
5. And then lastly, to apply strategy. Only at this point are you qualified enough to actually apply strategy in your decisions. Anything you did before this point was a stab in the dark at best, hoping for a favorable outcome. Once you get to point 5, you have the ability to play less than 10 minute games against even intermediate players, if your game goes over 10 minutes, you have to start paying attention, the competition arrived.
With TBS the same applies to a large extend with one big difference. The L2P priorities do not have point number 1. You immediately jump to strategy aspects. You do not need to learn to type from scratch. You DO need to learn the game... and this makes it true strategy. Yes, the real time aspect that is gone makes for less exiting and no pace, but the tradeoff is a game where you can almost start with a level playing field.
My opinion, trademarked, feel free to go lolwut?

Re: X-COM UFO: Enemy Unkown
Ok so I was wrong that it is an RTS but it is strategy
I played real time in xcom 3 because turn based wasn't exactly my strong point at the time. But its something I can live with now. Still both RTS and TBS shares one important aspect, timing.
btw...

That would be people like me but I question Blizzard as a name these days. The quality bound to it isn't there anymore.D3PART3D wrote:Who cares about HotS now?

Re: X-COM UFO: Enemy Unkown
Having played the game for 2 days now I can give a short opinion on the game.
Visually the game looks good but not as detailed as say StarCraft 2. I've only played Xcom apocolypse as turn based games weren't my thing. Even then I got out right slaughtered. It was a game unlike Warcraft or Command and Conquer.
The game plays very similar to its roots. You command a squad of up to 6 units, gearing them out with the best equipement you can find or produce. Everything is about making choices and you will find yourself reloading a certain part of the game more than you would like either accepting that your squad can die or that they might end up in the infirmary for a few days.
The game is very console simplified but it manages to work well even on pc.
The game is relentless and unforgiving. Xcom fans will be pleasantly surprised while new comers or players looking for punishment will find this a rewarding venture.

if you're not careful, i'll show you on my cpu where they touched me... and they're mindless drivel designed to appeal to delusional mouth-breathers...
back on topic, i'm ashamed that i have yet to get this game... the reviews look good... but i've had a number of folks hint at some dodgy control behaviour on the PC...

Re: X-COM UFO: Enemy Unkown
Yes there are steam achievements. Try getting the one where your first surviving soldier makes it through to the end of the game alive.
The control issue is a leveled surface issue. It is annoying. But other than that one control, nothing else really.
