Picking an LED

Post by Jonboy »

Hi guys,

Looking to buy my first big-screen TV and found a promotion on this weekend for a 42" Sansui LED with the following specs:
1920 x 1080 (120Hz)
5ms Response time
Dynamic Contrast Ratio: 50 000:1

This with a 2 year guarantee and a free new-gen media player seems like an excellent deal.

Thoughts?

Sounds decent. I never had any issues with Sansui TV's in the past.

There's a new HiFi Corp opening today at Southgate and they are doing the usual opening specials thing, if you're willing to brave the crowds. Think I saw a 40" Samsung FHD in the pamphlet for R3999.

Actually had a look at those specials, the difference there is I think that was an LCD and spec for spec had only 1 HDMI port. Besides that, crowds at Southgate on an opening day aren't worth R1000 :)

So just some feedback, over at the MyBB forums a lot of people instantly slate anything that isn't Samsung and everything sold by Hifi Corp. But here's my experience, I bought the 42" LED in question last week and I can honestly tell you that this set is amazing. Compared to my brothers 40" Samsung LCD, the picture quality is sharper. The unit boasts a 120Hz processor and a really minimal response time.

I could have bought the Samsung equivalent, a 40" LED for R1000 more from Game but I don't know if I could justify the extra money. The other "budget" LEDs also usually only have one HDMI port, I got three. This unit is also manufactured in SA and has a two year guarantee. I've also heard that all the screens are manufactured at the same factory in Asia and the units are then separately assembled per manufacturer.

The sound quality is shoddy, but that can be expected from any LED because of the space they have to work with, so today I'll go pick up this surround system on special at Game http://www.samsung.com/africa_en/consum ... ab=feature - this sytem will basically route all my sound through the external speakers and also has the Samsung media player / USB connectivity which I know supports external hard-drives so all my media will be played through there.

Overall, couldn't be happier with my purchase. And even though I'm a PC fanbooi, I'd love to see what PS3 games would look like on this system!
