Post by Sylar_dl »

Thanks

That depends on two things:
  • What's the specifications for the rest of your rig?
  • How much can you afford to spend on the graphics card?

Welcome to the forums:)
As Ron sAid, it depends what the rest of your rig is like becAuse you could end up getting a greAt grAphics card but if the rest of the rig is too slow you will end up cAusing a bottleneck in your system.

Well it definatly has a core i5 quad with about 12gb of ram can't remember the mother board but I do know that four or 5 years ago it was one of the best gigabyte mb's on the market. the Display is a SAMSUNG S24A350HS LED LCD - 24" (don't entend to play at max res (unless the card can handle it) but minamen res that I want to play on is 1024x728) and it has a couple of tb's of data. I proberly bought to much ram but i get carried away easly. Since I blew my money away on hard drives(Tv show addict) and ram I'm looking at about 1300 for a graphics card

What's up with the capital A's? You missed one in "card" and one in "a" :?

You're running an i5 with 12GB RAM (yes, that would be overkill) on a board that's 4-5 years old?

I would be very interested to know the model number of that board. For casual gaming and watching videos the HD6770 should serve you fine. If you can afford it go for it.

It would definitely be more helpful if we had more specific information: mobo number, power supply, specific CPU

I'm sorry to say this but you spent your money in completely the wrong way. With the setup you describe the card you would want to go for is a 560ti or 460gtx. That would be 6950 radeon if your going the AMD rout. And those cards are between R1800-R2500.

If he's happy to play games at 1024x768 and otherwise watches TV series doe he really need a 6950? Seriously?

Sorry about the capital A's Stuart:) my phones A button is broken. But I've found a way to use lowercase A's now.
For a casual gaming rig the 6770 is fine. If you want something a bit better consider the HD6850, it will run all of your games at max res

In the words of Johnny Cockran: " It does not, make, sense!".

Anyway, Rebeltech has a 6790 for R1300.

I think what he means is the mobo was launched 4-5 years ago. But he only bought it recently...

No, we get it. I'd just like to know what motherboard Gigabyte released five years ago for the i5 CPU. I may be completely stupid (I sense an epic fail coming up here) but I recall that the i-core CPUs only came out in late 2008. Which means, according to your reckoning, that Gigabyte released an i5 board two years before the first i7s hit the market?

It must be an i5 750? 760? But that's not too important to us because at least we know that the cpu won't be bottlenecked... However we need to know how big the psu is. 500W? 600W?
If it is too small then you won't be able to power your gpu.

So if your psu is About 550W - 600W you will be safe regardless of which low-mid range gpu you choose, ie ATI 67xx 68xx series or 460gtx or the 440

No you are not wrong. The i7's were released in November 2008 and the i5 in September 2009. I think he must be overestimating the release date of his mobo, the board cant be older than about 2 years as in 2008 skt 1156 did not exist only 1366 did. And i5's do not use 1366 only 1156 and now 1155

And what is the moral of the story? The OP does not in fact have Gigabyte's top rated motherboard from 4-5 years ago. Or, if he does, he will struggle to fit his unheard of 4GHz i5 CPU into it (I'm assuming that's what "4.00 core i5" means) with his 12GB RAM. So no Desperate Housewives for you, buddy!

Let's simplify this: If you want us to help, please provide us with model numbers for your motherboard and CPU, otherwise I'm just going to lock this thread and let it shrivel in the corner there with that other thread about horses.

The moral of the story is either that he is making the whole thing up or is seriously confused and knows nothing about computers. The "best mobo on the market" claim already makes his story dodgy

Okay, let's leave this thread alone now until we hear more from the OP please. Nothing constructive is going to be added until we have more info.
