Looking for a new Wifi Router

Post by kkksmith »

I'm in the market for a new wifi router at work. This will be used in a 3 floor building. 50 m radius. This is to extend our lan to some rooms that can't be easily reached with cable.

Any suggestions?

You'll be looking at one of the DLink WAPs. Something with 2 or more antennas and an n rating. If your talking games however I've had issues with World of Warcraft running on n and its prefers b/g. So streaming apps might have a problem. Your looking for anything from R750 per access point up.

Best way is to connect with a wired hub where you can then slap access points as a repeater at each hub and use a common router at your dsl point.

I have a netgear wnr2000.

It easily covers 3 floors including a basement, and probably covers the radius you want. Reception is decent considering we use usb adaptors with internal antennas...

The agents are useless though...

Which would you suggest D-Link DAP-1360, DLink DIR-615 or netgear wnr2000?

^^ Depends. If your network already has a router on it (or if you want your network to be completely isolated from the rest of the internet), then you'll probably want the DAP-1360. Otherwise, you'll want the DIR-615 or WNR2000.

I'd be tempted to choose the DIR-655 over the DIR-615, primarily for the IPv6 support.

Then getting them to set up a LAN for gaming seems like a logical way of retaining interest in the subject?

And of course you'd have to 'supervise'. aka 'join in'.
