August annoyances
I'd like to say thanks for the article on the AMD and intel upgrading options. I had no idea the poor q6600 was so badly dated. And finally got some graphs showing AMD options compared to the intel recommended option allows me to advise people better in the future.
...now for the mistake... Radeon HD6950 is R3000 cheaper than the Geforce 570GTX? Last time I checked the 6950 went for R3000 vs R4000 for the 570GTX.

Re: August annoyances
Welll wonwon they are dated... my old E6850 that is a duel core actually performs better than a Q6600 and the E6850 is a snail compared to the space shuttles coming from Intel lately.

Even if you OC both to 3GHz? 2.4GHz of the Q6600 is probably what takes most of the performance away?my old E6850 that is a duel core actually performs better than a Q6600

Re: August annoyances
I just think there is something fundametally wrong with the first iteration of quad core cpu's they never really performed as they should have. Much like early renditions of SLI where you actually lost a lot of the performance from the second card. Besides that the E6850 has more L1/L2 cache per core than the Q6600 which already points to a fail for the Q6600

Re: August annoyances
Didnt it have something to do with the first quad cores not being true quad cores? I owned a Q6600 for 2 years but I wanted to move on. My i7 at current is performing very nicely.
A shame though that the article didn't include what happens if you go sli or crossfire. Might have been interesting to see if a pair of 460GTX were cheaper than either the 6950 and 570gtx with a much better performance overall.

Nope couldn't do that, if they did they would have nominated it for "most informative article of the year."

Re: August annoyances
Mmm
Ok boys and girls. You have a crappy (or as Ron would put it, Old Faithfull) Q6600. Your in dire need of performance. But your limited to R3k. Would you replace the system or would you get a SLI setup that improves performance above and beyond the cpu restrictions? Find out in the near future...
I don't think P35 boards came with SLI support though. I never looked at SLI or crossfire until recently and even after my crossfire test I was disappointed in getting only 50% increased frame rate in a crossfire mode.
So Ron I have a request if you guys still have the systems lying around. Pop in a 460gtx and see if the cpu bottleneck is broken a bit? The 8800gts, 460gtx and 570gtx would make good comparissons in sli mode.

I know how you feel, I have poor E7500. But it does what it needs to do and I can run all my games in the highest setting without any problems so why would I need the latest i7 2600K right now.Ron2K wrote: You leave my poor Q6600 out of this!
No 460 here either ....just my cheap and cheerful GTS450Ron2K wrote:I don't have a GTX460 lying around - still on my Old Faithful GTX260.

Re: August annoyances
Pffft you lot complaining about your C2D procs...
I am still sitting with my AMD FX-62, its "slower" than all of your C2D procs. Luckily I have a GTX 460 so that makes up for it in some way or another .
And Star for R3K I wont get much on a performance increase. It will cost me a lot more than R3k to upgrade... *sigh*
/Any who back on topic...
Those are quite some mistakes... Maybe they were busy having a COD Execution match? See who could make the prettiest blood splatter when shooting K/B in the head?

Re: August annoyances
lol
But the article was informative non the less. But I guess you get what you can pay for and try to make the best of it. I never knew the i7 was this powerful though. I looked at just cause 2 with me getting 60fps with everything maxed back when I had the 5870 and wondered what everyone was on about. But even with these figures it seems there are things I took for granted with this cpu.
Still it doesn't stop surprising me on how good games run even 2 years after I bought it. My other systems usually started struggling by now with the highest settings.
