Which one to blame?
Which one to blame?
We are running a small home network with 5 pc's and 5gb capped internet. All the pc's have access to the internet.
We have already used 4.6 gb of the 5gb cap. Which seems impossible since I have not downloaded something big. And nobody else clames to have do so. But someone has to take blame.
Which leads me to my question: Is there a way to determine which pc is using all our prescios cap? Is there software that I can download? Pleez I need to catch this thief!!

Most likely.......my next door neighbours had one of these, and I would spend the whole day watching Top Gear at their expense But they seem to have put a password on, about time I was able to do this for 3 monthsRon2K wrote:Unsecured/insecure wireless?

Do not underestimate the size of software updates for x5 OS's and other random sw updates.
I'm not saying that's the culprit, but it is something to keep an eye on.

Yeah, 5gig cap for 5 pc's is not a heck of a lot. A decent amount of browsing, email and updates will easily deplete that much. Better get a bigger cap. We use about 3 - 4 GB each month between my boss and me with no big downloads.
Edit: Wait; 4.6GB in 9 days? That's bit high.

A friend of mine got a fine of R14 000 for doing this. With a decent lawyer he was able to get it down to R7000.THE_STIG wrote:Most likely.......my next door neighbours had one of these, and I would spend the whole day watching Top Gear at their expense But they seem to have put a password on, about time I was able to do this for 3 monthsRon2K wrote:Unsecured/insecure wireless?

That is a lame rationalisation. You could have left them a note in their postbox.Hey, they were dumb enough not to have a password......I was teaching them a lesson

Re: Which one to blame?
I can't say I'm entirely innocent from stealing peoples cap but I learnt my lesson and stopped ages ago.
Put a network monitor on each PC or between the PCs and the router and see what you get.
I use 9gigs easily between 4 computers and 2 smart phones but that's in a month.

Wired (network cables), and the router does not even have wireless capebileties.

Like Sojourn says, just have a look at OS updates.
Especially if there was a new install of an OS or even Office in the last 10 days..
A clean install of win 7 (pre SP1 in particular) which is set to auto patch for important and critical updates as well as patching Office will gobble up a gig and a half in no time at all.
Or what about if someone has just reloaded a game like WoW and patched it? That would blow your 5 gig in no time at all.
