Microsoft Word numbering problem

Post by StarPhoenix »

I have in front of me a document where the numbering of items goes from 3.1 to 3.2 and then, instead of 3.2.1, it jumps back to 2.9.6, following on from the previous section. I would like Word to number the sections properly please. How do I do this?

Thank you

Right click on the number and select the "Restart at . . ." option.

I don't see any.

I tried inserting one after 2.9.6, but it did n't make any difference. Still went from 3.2 to 2.9.7.

Start new list isn't helping either. It won't let me change it and says that the value is less than the previous value in the list
when I try to change it.

Can't you just press tab and it will autonumber the items according to their indentation?

Birdie - when you click anywhere on the incorrect number - does a little box with an arrow appear?

Yes, Cat.

It only gives me one option though.

Can't you email the doc to one of us to check it out for you?

What version of Word are you using?

That would make it much easier to fix. Just spent some time showing a client how they could fix the numbering in all their legal docs when they moved from 03 to 07. It pulled out horribly because they had not created the documents correctly in the first place.

Send it to one of us and we will be able to help you. I will only be around after 2pm so you may want to try someone else first.
